Yes, you need 2. Please note, that while the wires seem to be well constructed, the banana plugs are not. They pull off and break after 2-3 movements of the speakers. I have had to "rebuild" these cables with higher quality banana plugs

There is 240 strand counts per conductor.

Yes, This cable is to connect from the av receiver to one speaker.

Q: If the metal caps are touching, will it be a short?

Yes, I verified with my DMM that the metal caps are conductive. You would short out your amp if they touched.
