Q: Anyone have any luck getting rid of the purple/blue tint on pine in any way?

I had good luck achieving a nice driftwood gray color (instead of bluish-purple) on pine by mixing it 1/1 with water first - it seems like the bluish-purple color comes from the product being pretty strong straight out of the can. The good news: getting twice the amount I need from a can (when mixed 1/1 with water). Putting a coat of urethane on top (after dried) darkens it - no need for a second coat (and potentially making it bluish-purple).

Q: Can you use it on pressed wood?

Yes but not sure the look would be what you want. It ages the wood bringing out the grain on pressed wood it would exaggerate the pieces of pressed wood a gel stain Might be a better product. You can make faux grain.

Q: can the stain be lightened after it's applied? I have darker areas where it overlapped.

Try leaving the treated wood out in the sun. The UV rays start to fade/lighten the effect on wood. You may need to leave in the sun for several days. Just experiment with it.

Q: what is the best topcoat for this product to retain the colour?

laquer then followed by poly. just poly will lighten your satisfied color.
