I was hoping the print was bigger. They are hard to use because the print is small.

Disappointng
I am a semi-retired live-in Nanny and have in the last decade helped to raise three small children One of my biggest challenges was trying to help the little ones with their common core math. Math was my best subject in High School. I used to score 90 and above on all my tests. I took four years of Maths and Sciences in HS and I could not explain fourth grade math. I approached the Mom of the house who was an elementary school principal for a Philadelphia Charter School about the BS that was common core. Of course like a dutiful good principal she defended common core but also mentioned how the teachers struggled with teaching it. No wonder I thought. She said her parents don't understand it either. Why? Because what the common core folks did was to try to break down math into thought processes. Where a simple math problem becomes an algorithm. I guess the powers that be think children need to be programmed like computers. Little computers that are good at taking tests. On a freebie table I picked up this set of cards, Learning targets for Grade One, my speciality. These cards are supposed to be displayed in a classroom of first graders. First grade can't even read some of the words on these Math cards. Sample question, "How is counting on related to the number sequence? How are numbers read, written, and represented?" As an adult, can you answer that question? Why "count on" instead of "count"? Why did number line become number sequence? What does representing a number mean? All this is about teaching first graders to count from the number 1 to the number 120.In my day and I still teach my homeschoolers how to count to 120 like this. "Okay kids who here is ready to count to 120? Let's all count together. Then we do. Success.
