Q: I want to buy a dauber like this, built into the lid of a bottle or can, for daubing herbicide onto cut stumps. Any ideas?

My best suggestion is to go online and seek out suppliers of that item you are searching for. My alternate solution would be to locate a suitable container with a metal cap and simply solder the dauber to the metal cap. If that is too difficult, then try buying some product similar to shoe polish and re-use it for your particular needs. Hope this helps.

Q: Can they be degreased with acetone?

These are made with 100% cotton ball dauber material that is not affected by acetone or other solvents.

Q: Do these work better than sponge brushes for applying dye to shoes?

I believe it can depend on your particular skill level and what you are used to working with. Personally, I prefer the old-fashioned cotton fiber over a sponge type. I've used mine for applying stains and neatsfoot oil and they worked very well, w/o the residue of the sponge type that breaks down the longer they are used leaving bits of sponge on the item being applied to.

This is an excellent value for the money. The only issue I had, and it was minor, was that these seemed to shed wool fibers a little more than I was used to with other daubers. This was generally a minor complaint and I usually could sweep the fibers off my project without causing an issue. This was more noticeable in larger projects or multiple projects in a row using the same dauber. This might be an issue when applying a finish as you want to be extra observant you get any loose fibers off your project before the finish sets, awkwardly locking in bits of wool. If you are careful, though, this shouldn't be a big issue.
