Q: Is this a bayonet or screw fitting

This is a Bayonet fitting. Push and twist for the bulb to lock into place. Not a screw type fitting which would be classed as a Edison screw fitting. Hope this helps.

Q: Can you fit a lampshade to this fitting

Yes. as with any holder unscrew the bulb protector ring and a standard Uk shade will fit.

All batten holders have similar fixing centres and this is just a staandard batten holder so it will probably be fine.

Q: How do I get the main white bit off from the ceiling to unscrew the fitting ?

The type shown in the picture has a piece screwed to the ceiling and the bit you can see screws off like a jar lid
