Q: will this work with the lifetime 71526 backboard and rim competition combo?

I am not sure but we have a normal one story roof and it would not work at all. Ranch style home with a normal pitched roof and our roof wasn't tall enough for it and the brackets was not spaces for the framing so we were going to have to add additional board to attach it.

Hi Kevin - Great question. Our Spalding Converter Mounting Bracket is equipped with all the hardware to mount the bracket to a Spalding hoop. Due to construction methods varying, additional hardware is required to mount the hoop to a wall or off. Q: Will this fit on a round pole with a 3.6 inch diameter?

I did not mount mine to a pole...however, there are all kinds of bracket pieces and U bolts in the kit. It should not be an issue, and if the U bolts were too large for the diameter of your pole you could easily locate smaller U bolts. I combined brackets and extensions from my kit and some extra brackets that came with my backboard to position mine exactly where I wanted it. It was simple and straightforward... the only thing I would add is to use blue loctite on all bolts.
