This product worked perfectly to fix my office chair. This was a lot less expensive than buying a whole new chair. It’s a fairly simple process to change it out.

Reason for replacement - So rather than a failing piston or a squeaking one, the reason I replaced mine was because my new desk was much taller than my previous one leading to some discomfort and me looking like a child behind it, much to the amusement of my spouse. I needed to greatly increase the possible height of my chair and rather than replace it outright I thought to simply upgrade the piston. After some research into the travel of each cylinder and measurements of what I had, it seemed the average travel included on my premium basic chair (~$180) and my spouses' nicer (~$400) chair was about 3 inches. Installation - Aside from the more difficult than needed removal of the existing piston the installation was remarkably simple and sturdy. Just slip it into the wheel base and the seat of the chair (not forgetting the plastic shroud for the piston). The dimensions of my existing piston matched this one; 2 inch base and 1 inch piston diameter. Summary thoughts - The 6 inch travel on this is immense. The base height on my chair is about the same or maybe a little higher than the existing height of my chair at full extent. Note though, I wasn't looking for a direct replacement but a taller one instead, so this worked perfectly. In my pictures you can see the difference between the two pistons, the greasy one is the older, smaller one at full height compared to the lowest setting on the newest piston. I am 6' 1" and at the highest setting, sitting full back and upright, my feet dangle about 6" above the ground. Which is the height I'm writing this review at. :) While silly it works well for my desk height and I can lower it to pair better for a proper foot rest for ergonomic purposes. Hope this review is helpful for others seeking to do a similar replacement.

This review is based on installation and initial observations (less that 24 hrs of use). Pros: Prefect piston length for a tall person (I am over 6ft tall). When installed on a standard base w/ standard height wheels, and fully extended, my feet barely reach the floor. Good range of adjustment. Materials, fit and finish seem about right for far-East production. Cons: I believe that some other reviewer has mentioned this already: the nylon gas release button on top of the piston is a little Too Long. That created a situation where the gas release is always depressed by a typical height adjustment lever. In my case, this button measured 0.4000" (10.17mm) high, while my two older cylinders had buttons measuring 0.3765" (9.56mm) and 0.3245" (8.25mm) respectively. Filing / sanding off 0.04" / 3/64" / 1mm is not hard per se but you still need some tools. Hand filing or sanding nylon takes a while. If you have a power tool (sander or a Dremel tool) work takes a sec but it's also easier to take off too much. And there is also an issue of being able to measure it reliably (not everybody has calipers handy). So buyer beware. In the end I cut down mine to about 0.355" (9mm) high and it works beautifully. <<Edit added 2 days after the original review>> Well, at 9mm high the gas release button was still too high for my chair mechanism -- had to shave it off another 1mm, down to 8mm high. Again, the process is easy enough IF you have tools and skill to both: take the chair completely apart and do the modification. Bottom Line: The extra long gas release button might be a curse or a feature you want -- it all depends on your specific chair chassis. Just be mindful that the process of modifying it is not all that easy.

So far so good it’s sting and works well. I have 12 year old Herman miller top end chair. It fits I did but one single wrap of electrical tape around the top of the shock at the base of the chair to snug it up. It’s been like new

I have a shop chair with a failed cylinder. This chair cylinder is a money saver. It's stronger than the original (on paper) and I purchased a taller one which is more comfortable for me. Removing the old one was the most difficult part of the process.

This was a good purchase and fairly easy to install. I am mechanical but I had to make a few changes on the fly. First, my chair has the metal assembly which is held to the seat by 4 bolts. I watched one of the "how to" videos on the You Tube channel. That helped. Here is what I found out. A rubber mallet was necessary to whack off the wheeled base. It took quite a few blows and I rotated it each time I smacked it. That kept the balance and prevented me from straining the hole for the new cylinder. Secondly, I tried the pipe wrench to turn the cylinder without any success. So, I decided to take off the hold down bolts that keep the assembly attached to the seat. I tried finding an allen wrench but I could never find one to quite match. Next I decided to use a crescent wrench. I could not get enough torque to turn the bolts. I looked for a common open end wrench but that failed. Thinking this might be metric I brought up my socket set. No, it was not metric. Finally by trial and error I found that I needed a 13/32 socket. Now most of you who do not have a lot of tools will likely not have this. So, be warned. Having taken the bolts off, I placed the assembly with the cylinder in my bench vise. I used a punch and a hammer to knock the old cylinder out. Reassembly was much faster and easier. Just reverse the process.. I found that the cylinder made my old 15 year chair work like new.
