Powerful Phrases for Dealing with Difficult People

This is a must read for managers at various levels. I enjoyed reading the book because it gave several real life examples of dealing with difficult people and how to work through the steps to best handle the situation. As I was reading, I often associated the scenarios to what I deal with at work. I’m a manager at a company that have people of various backgrounds and unique personalities. This book has helped me improve my skills of working with difficult employees. I highly recommend!

I, sadly, AM a difficult person, so when dealing with others I am learning how to handle my end of the conversation better without feeling like I have to control the conversation(s) of anyone else involved. This book has helpful, easy-to-read, quick-to-learn statements that aid me through MY struggling part of any conflict, work, personal. etc. Used it recently with a relationship that got in a train wreck when another party interfered, escalating the situation. Then, of course, my part became intensified, and so on. Possible irreparable damage, but when getting together three weeks later to "talk it over," this book helped keep it on an even keel. (Wasn't embarrassed to take note cards since they were actually evidence I was trying - as was the other party - and it kept me on track when I wanted to veer.) Highly recommend!

The author of this book has good strategies for work place conflict resolution, and I believe many of her ideas may work out well. The book, however, repeats the same information, in the same words, sometimes up to three times, before finally moving forward. This makes a considerable portion of the writing tedious reiteration. Yet the book is worth reading for the conflict resolution skills, and the "powerful phrases" sections give ideas and words to use when it is necessary to tread cautiously and not escalate personality issues at the office.

Well, it wasn't exactly what I was looking for but I'm keeping it. Had hoped to find more nuanced suggestions for dealing with difficult conversations. Perhaps I was expecting too much. This would be a good first book to give to high school or college students who might be facing difficult conversations; but not sure anyone already skilled at higher level communication like college grads, executives or those in the helping professions (like me) will find much use for it.

This really is a powerful book. It’s the most practical and useful book I’ve read in a long time. The scenarios and resolution tools are applicable in all types of work situations. Thank you so much!

I highly recommend this book be given with the employee's handbook. The scenarios presented in the book are excellent examples of situations that actually occur on a daily basis at work.

This books provides guidance on dealing with annoying people. Step by step instructions with examples are included. This book is great.

Great book as it relate to dealing with all types of people. The gave many examples of how to handle difficult people and our reactions to them.

The book contains a lot of useful phrases to deal with the most common difficult peole at work. It is very detailed and does not just rush through the topics. Unfortunately the solutions have the requirement that the person who you speak to is reasonable and capable of criticism. The persons you have to deal with at work usually do not have these attributes (I can only speak for Germany) so the solutions may only work for a limited group of Persons. I would rate it a 3.5/5.

Easy to read and understand. Who doesn't have difficult people around? This book is helpful in understanding and working with people that are not easy to get along with.
