Nice lockset with small issue (easily resolved)
I purchased this lock for the touchpad features as well as the capability to integrate into my home automation system via Z-wave. I ran into a small issue during installation that I was able to resolve. I feel it might be helpful to inform others on how to resolve, since it was a simple fix (but not obvious). The issue: The turnpiece (knob on inside to turn to lock and unlock) and shaft were pointing 180 degrees in the wrong direction. The turnpiece should be oriented pointing up when the lock is closed was instead pointing down and limited in range. Since the shaft (from the outside part of the lock) that mates with the turnpiece is keyed (looks like a "D" in profile), it must be oriented in a specific way to mate correctly. Since the turnpiece was oriented in the wrong direction and has stops limiting the range, it appeared that the only way to make this work would be to install the part of the lock visible inside the house upside down. Clearly unacceptable. Long story short: I started the return process with Amazon and the first recommendation that appeared was to call Kwikset customer service. I called and resolved the issue over the phone in about 10 minutes. It was quick and right to the point. The resolution: I was asked to hold the inside half of the lock (together with electronics /motor still inside) and turn the turnpiece (knob) to the upright orientation (pointing up). The knob/shaft had some resistance - stops - that I had to firmly turn past in order to get the correct orientation. Once the orientation was correct, I was able to pull the insides out of the back case (per the instructions) and continue the installation as per the instructions. Well it worked! Final notes: This was a direct replacement for a deadbolt. Except for the small issue above, it was really easy and relatively straightforward. Not only was the installation quick and easy, but the pairing to my home automation system was simple. The lock looks good and functions exactly as expected. I only wish they would have included this troubleshooting tip either in the instructions or online.

Better than giving a key out
There is a KwikSet 916 set to work with Amazon's Alexa, Z-Wave, Z-Wave Plus (updated Z-Wave), or Zigbee controllers. You'll need to know what smart controller you plan to sync the electronic lock to. One doesn't need to sync to a smart home controller for it to work, just to take advantage of programming possibilities as well as have up to 30 unique pincodes (you are limited to 16 w/out a smart home controller). KwikSet does sell a controller that one can sync to a wireless router as an alternative to a smart home controller. Think KwikSet's controller is about $90. Replacing an existing deadbolt is straightforward, the instructions were well written, albeit a bit small to read. Suggest going to KwikSet's website to watch the video on installation. If you are going to installing w/ a home controller, it may be required to connect the two halves and power up within 3 to 5 feet of the controller. This is to ensure a secure pairing with a low-powered signal from the controller to the electronic lock. The outside faceplace is no thicker than a standard deadlock. The inside faceplace is thicker as this holds the 4-AA battery pack (4 batteries were included). To wake up the lock, press one's palm or three fingers on the faceplace. If you have the added security feature activated (there is a dip-switch setting to turn this on/off) two random numbers will appear (e.g.: 3 and 8). You can press these numbers in low number to high number or vice-versa. After this, all the entries will light up on the faceplace. This is where you enter the unlock pincode (four to ten digit number). If one enters a bad or incomplete pincode, the faceplate will flash the 1 3 5 7 9 numbers and then re-display all the values again. As I am writing this, do not recall if there is a lockout if a bad pincode is entered multiple times. Will read through the documents again. With it synced with a controller, you'll get a message it time it is used. Different home controllers may offer different options, like restricting certain pincodes to certain day(s)/certain time(s) or a specific date and time-window. Each should allow you to receive a text message or email any time the lock is engaged. Took about 30 minutes to install, included time to read the instructions and remove the old deadlock. After one attaches the outside and inside faceplates suggest to not test the lock as the internal mechanism needs to zero-out the throw of the lock. There is a step in the instructions after installing the outside faceplace with the inside mounting bracket so as to test the lock movement. If you already are using KwikSet locks, you can re-key the new lock w/ your existing keys. If you do not have Kwikset locks, then there is a set to check your current home key w/ the lock for compatibility. The re-keying of the lock takes 5 seconds and the re-key tool is included w/ the kit. Have written KwikSet if there is a lockout after repeated 'bad' pincode entries.

Great Lock
Was able to easily replace old worn out lock with this new model. Looks great and works well. Really like the touch screen instead of the button model. Was easy to connect to z-wave for use with our current alarm system.

Unit is pretty good but goes through batteries in about 6 weeks.
I have a front entry door i dont use much, but its handy to be able to enter a code or use my phone to enter the house. Having the screen automatically change number location is a security plus(which everyone should do). The unit works as expected except the battery life. I use the door maybe four times a month(meaning i dont undo the deadbolt myself ) and within 6 weeks the little red light is blinking. It starts blinking well before my smartthings app warns me the battery is low though, so you are better to have it linked in to get a clearer picture of the battery as the led indicator jumps the gun a bit ( like 2 weeks ). I switched to rechargeable batteries from standard batteries, no noticeable change in operating capabilities or battery life. Useful so i am not buying batteries all the time. The battery life is why i took one star off. As for the install, that took a little bit of effort but if you follow the instructions to the letter and dont assume things, you will be just fine. Make sure your bolt is straight on with the door frame and you may need to pick out more door frame if your old bolt was smaller ( i had to with a wood chisel for easy clean lines ). Use the security screws to ensure someone kicking the door in has a hard time. I also bought the zwave enable smartcode unit with the manual push buttons for my garage entry door, the batteries on that last like 4 months and i use it every day, twice a day. Also relatively straight forward to install.

The Kwikset SmartCode Touchscreen Electronic Deadbolt Featuring SmartKey Security was fine but was so disappointed that I did not receive the "Avalon Handleset with Tustin Right Handed and Left Handed Lever Work" which say "AND" in the item description and kind of mislead me in buying the item.

Swapped out a 910 which has no keypad just a key lock with zwave - still working just fine for a couple years - this one is now on the back door. Anyway the 916 with touch pad is so much more convenient... also is zwave + and is smaller and quieter! The original shipment came in wrong color, but Amazon quickly sent a replacement... easy to pair to vera plus... easy to program codes... easy to install... and easy to re-key. Works great!

these were totally inclement weather resistant unlike other brands where the canadian weather did them in.

I first integrated this with a Universal Devices ISY-994 controller over z-wave and it worked great! I later integrated it with my Ring Alarm and I am even happier because the Ring integration is very clever and intuitive. If there are multiple users setup on the Ring Alarm panel, the same code can be used to unlock/lock the door as well as disarm/arm the alarm. Ring app will tell you who unlocked the door.

I have not had a single disconnect with this z-wave lock. Response is good and battery life seems good as well.
