Seagate Ultra Compact 1TB SSD extern, 1000MB/s, USB 3.1 Typ C, Data Rescue Service (STMX1000400)

I bought this as my previous (seagate) harddrive was used for my old Windows laptop and therefore not compatible with my Macbook. This one particularly appealed to me for the appearance (which is also made from recycled materials, ticking off another positive for it!) and it's compatibility. So far, it's been working great and transfers are very fast. It heats up a little bit if I'm using it for a while but I'm sure that's pretty normal for any HDD. This comes with a USB-C cable straight out of the box so it's compatible with any Macbooks with no USB 2.0/3.0 ports. While slightly expensive, it works well out of the box and is a great option for Mac users, providing a good amount of storage for the price!

This Little Drive is amazing, love the looks and the functionality, it also comes with a 6-month dropbox backup subscription and Mylo 6 months for photo organising and editing. It is pre-formatted so pretty much plug and go. The file transfer is super fast. I am yet to test working with it properly, but I am already thinking to get another one for all my sound design files and software instruments for music production.

I got this drive and discovered it only has a USB-C to C cable with it. I dont have this on my desktop at all. No biggie i have plenty of those cables, but then found it performed at a meagre peak of 40MBs a second and video playback would constantly freeze. Thought it was a faulty drive till i tried it on my tablet with the original cable and got 130MBs no freezes etc. Ended up buying one of these to pair with my desktop and now all is well; https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07D7S93DD I had some pretty decent cables and even tried a USB-C adapter, but only the above worked out in the end.

Oredered this to replace a broken external drive which I use for my MacBook with Time Machine. Registration was easy and connecting to MacBook via USB-C was simple plug in. Time Machine formatted the disk automatically and then backed up my hard drive. Simple and it works straight out the box. Also has recovery codes included should they be required. Great service from Amazon, highly recommended.

Works well and is especially suitable for USB-C computer ports, i.e. it can plug straight in without an adapter. This drive is also light and shapely.

Avoid this company’s products if possible because their customer support is non-existent and if you have a fault with one of their products you won’t be able to get it fixed. My experience with their abysmal service is as follows. I bought a Seagate Ultra Touch 2TB HDD on 4th July from Amazon to be used for Time Machine backups of my Macbook Air. The product worked ok for a couple of weeks, but then the disc started powering down and disconnecting every time a backup was completed, creating an error message, with no drive shown in Explorer. It then reconnected each time the next backup started, leaving my screen full of error messages, especially after overnight backups. I checked the backups when the disc was connected and fortunately, they’d been recorded successfully. I ran the Mac Disk Utility app and it said there were no faults on the HDD. I checked the Time Machine app and there are no settings for auto disconnect. The only support service offered by Seagate on the contacts page on their website is a webchat facility. This is accompanied by a note that says “As of June 30, 2023 our support options have changed. Please take advantage of our online chat support for a faster response or self-help options listed below.” A fast and supportive response from their team is vapourware based on my experience. I contacted the webchat support service and after 30 minutes, and some tests with the agent, the cable shipped with the drive was identified as faulty. The agent then said I was being transferred to a colleague who would read my transcript and continue the call. The second agent told me that the cable was out of warranty as it was over 90 days old, even though I registered the product on the 5th July 2023! I had to provide proof of purchase, and after another 30 mins, the agent said that I was being transferred to another colleague. However, this time I was returned to the virtual assistant and had to connect to the webchat service again! The third agent challenged that the cable needed replacing but finally accepted it was faulty. After 30 minutes, making 1½ hours in total on the call, he checked the accessory was in stock and typed “I have requested a sales order to provide you with a new USB cable, you should be contacted in the next 24 to 48 hours with an update to the next step”. As I felt that the process had taken far too long, and had involved far too many agents, for such a trivial issue, I asked for the email address of their customer services department so I could make a complaint – and was told there was no email address, but I could leave a comment at the end of the chat!!!! I then asked for the address of their Head Office and after being kept waiting for another 30 minutes, and therefore wasting 2 hours of my evening, the agent disconnected! I’ve not heard anything from Seagate since the webchat, so I’ve had to buy a replacement cable from Amazon. This is the worst customer service I’ve ever experienced, and it feels like they’re defrauding unsuspecting customers. Their website says: “We honor our people’s craftsmanship, take great pride in successfully collaborating with our partners, and care deeply about our customers and their data.” The one thing they don’t do is care deeply about their customers so avoid buying their products if possible.

Easy to install. Quiet and tiny. Faster and more portable than the drive it replaced. Love the little icon. Good quality overall. I'd buy it again.

Looks and Feels premium, got it in sale, good for backing up memories. The space available is 3.6 TB. I was going for SSD but somehow was saved as SSDs are not meant for long term storage, if not powered for long time like a year or so, can wipe out/erased data. HDDs are best for long term storage. Also a lot cheaper. Went with this Seagate variant as I wanted type-c cable, is more convenient for my windows and mac laptop. This variant is made up of recyclable stuff, hence is bit highly priced. You can go with One touch or Expansion variants as well, they are bit cheaper. One more reason to go with this was because most of the latest reviews about the One touch or Expansion drives were pretty negative, and there is no replacement/return from Amazon. You have to run to service center, that too they may give you a refurbished one as described in one of the reviews. I went with Seagate because I had another seagate 2 TB HDD which I bought in 2015, around 10 years have passed still working as new. So trust this brand. The write speeds when I was copying from 1 HDD to another was around 70-75 MBPS on an average while copying from Laptop was about 120-130 MBPS, so works for me. No need for any faster speeds. This one works with Mac and windows, comes with ExFAT file system. This one is bit thicker and is bit heavy. Need to be careful with it. 0.9 inch thick, hence finding a case for it would be tricky. Just a tip, the case you buy for this should be at least 4 cm think otherwise the drive and the connecting cable will press against each other. I bought a new Aircase for this, it somehow got closed but the wire was pressing against the drive, thankfully my previous case for old 2TB HDD was thick enough, so kept the new drive in it, and the old one in new case. A seagate application is available to install, once you follow the instructions provided in the PDFs already saved in drive. The app detects and provides various functionalities to do with the drive, like locking etc. Also helps in ejecting the drive safely. Nice interface. The wire provided is USB 3.2 Type C cable, good quality, thick. One issue which I've encountered with this external hard disk is that during a data transfer of about 250 GB from my old drive to the new one, I noticed strong internal movement when I touched the drive, which felt unusual and bit concerning. All in all happy with the purchase, hope this works long enough like it's predecessor which I have.
