Uni-tasker that works straight out of the box.
If you're like me, you've become frustrated with the lack of expression pedal inputs on the vast majority of otherwise outstanding USB MIDI keyboards. This little device helps to bridge that gap. It's well-built, bus-powered, and just works out of the box. The knob allows you to assign the expression pedal to any MIDI CC, but as far as I can tell doesn't adjust any other parameters. The only real drag is it eats up a USB slot, but that's a small price to pay to have easy, assignable expression pedal input. True, it's a uni-tasker device, but it does that one task exceedinly well, and if you're starved for an expression pedal input in your rig, then this thing might be your saving grace. Note: I did not test the switch functonality.

Works with Casio VZ-1, Windows 10, REAPER
It works with my setup - Amazon Basics universal sustain pedal (piano-style), M-Audio EX-P universal expression pedal, Windows 10, REAPER DAW and my awesome antique CASIO VZ-1 digital synthesizer. My new Inovus i88 digital piano has trouble with the SPY, though, as it (i88) also has trouble with REAPER's MIDI messages. One can conclude then that the SPY will work with _almost_ any device sending/receiving MIDI CC messages via the 1/4" and the standard MIDI in/out female jacks. Since it works with the VZ-1, Windows 10 and REAPER, it stands to logic that the i88 is at fault, or I'm at fault for not understanding the MIDI mechanics of the i88 (meager almost non-existent Inovus i88 documentation). In any case, if you need the SPY for your music/audio activities using expression/sustain/switch pedals, buy it and try if it works for your devices. It is built like a tank concerning the chassis. You can always return it if you are not satisfied. P.S. Make sure the polarity switch on your expression/sustain/switch pedals are correctly set for the SPY.

May trick you into thinking it's a switch pedal
I bought it to be used with an expression pedal, but since I haven't got one yet, I thought I could use it as a switch in the meantime. It appears the knob doesn't send midi data on its own, indeed. On the other hand, it doesn't send anything over USB when I plug in any midi output from my other devices. Maybe I'm missing the purpose too, but it seems weird. The support doesn't respond to my email. The build quality is very nice and sturdy. The manual is unacceptable - short and poorely translated.

Works great with a controller pedal. I was also hoping to use it with a sustain pedal. No joy!
Worked great out of the box with the inexpensive Nektar expression pedal I also ordered. I was also hoping to use it with a sustain pedal, but it seems that the switch jack is set up with a TRS input for a dual switch pedal for program change exclusively. I am not sure what pedal works with it, but I am guessing it is a momentary dual SPST pedal switch. I would have given it 5 stars if it supported both expression and sustain pedals.

Expression pedal to 5-pin MIDI, no USB required!
This thing does exactly what I need it to do, and is small and kinda cute. The pedal allows me to connect an expression pedal and send its values via the CC# of my choice to a 5-pin MIDI connection. Setting the CC# is bone simple. I haven't tried to set the MIDI channel because I haven't needed to. Aesthetically I like the choice of white LEDs for the status LEDs and the display. Reasonably priced too. Can't speak to durability since I just started using it yesterday, but I think as long as the only thing that touches the single knob/button is my hand (not my boot), it should be ok.

Incompatible
Incompatible with Yamaha FC-7 (Too Sensitive), Sustain pedal doesn't work as sustain function (program change instead) Not enough information to customers. Poor english translation on manual print

Works Perfectly
I am using this device for midi expression because my keyboard does not have that function. It is very easy to install and operate. It does exactly what I needed and I didn't have to pay a fortune for it. I tried several different pedals with it and the one I ended up with is a Dunlop DVP3 volume/expression pedal. The sweep and feel are perfect. The digital readout on the top is very handy to see the midi controller value as the pedal is moved up and down.

Weak Documentation Hides Build Quality and Function
The controller is well built and apparently functional. However, the accompanying (English) directions are not comprehensive or precise and do not relate well to standard MIDI terminology. I'm still not sure whether or not it will serve the purpose for which it was bought - I'll investigate further when I have more time.

Nice little unit with an all metal build. Let's you program cc/pc midi with 128 channels. I purchased for the use of converting analog units and signals to digital midi cc. For example, with Neural DSP and Cubase. Works perfectly. Nice trick to control things digitally that don't have ways to interface beside a 1/4 input jack. Albeit nonconvention the pre mentioned use case, if you think about it, you can use it for more things than just pedals and midi keyboards.

This product worked perfectly out of the package, easy to set up and components neatly wrapped. On plugging in it was easy to use. I did have a little trouble working out what the controls were b because the instructions were in chinese but i quickly learned via the internet. In summary this product does the job and it's worth buying
