We've had one heck of a fire season this year--and if you live in the Western United States, I can already see you nodding your head in agreement. That's probably why you're here reading this review. Thank goodness for air purifiers. Chances are you've already looked at tons of them. You might even be confused as to which one to choose. Hopefully I can help you out with that. In essence, all an air purifier has to do is filter the air and expel it in better shape than it inhaled it. Most units (including the Winix unit here) do this by pulling the air through a HEPA filter--and that certainly helps. If all you're looking to do is reduce dust, you can stop here. Pick a filter, any filter. You'll get the job done. But why stop with one layer of filtration when this unit offers you four? When the air enters your Winix, it will first encounter a cleanable dust screen. This screen is much like what you may have in front of your computer case fans. Large particles get stuck here rather than in your HEPA filter, meaning you won’t have to replace the HEPA as often. In fact, Winix recommends replacing the HEPA once a year; you may have noticed that other brands recommend changing filters every three months or so. That’s why, and it serves as Layer One. The next layer is a honeycomb filter which is filled with activated carbon. You see, HEPA filters alone won't eliminate odors. Just like how activated carbon will remove odors from fish tanks when used as part of the tank's filtration, it also removes odors from the air. Pet dander, wildfire smoke, a certain someone’s love of gassy foods… yeah, you’ll like this function. That’s Layer Two. Layer Three is the HEPA filter itself. Small particles you may not be able to see--but will still do a number on your eyes and sinuses--get stopped in their tracks here. Layer Four is a negative-ion filter that Winix calls “Plasmawave.” Without over complicating the science behind it, this feature will make it harder for viruses to spread and will cause smaller particles to sink where they can be collected easier. This feature can be turned off if you don’t see the need for such thoroughness or perhaps you’re skeptical of the process, but I strongly suggest leaving it on. When it’s time to change (or clean, in the case of your dust screen) your filters, getting to them is easy. The entire front panel is held on by magnets (better than plastic tabs which can break over time). The filters themselves are easy to find right here on Amazon, and they are reasonably priced. You’ll be switched over in minutes. Your biggest hassle just might be tearing your new filters out of its packaging. Now let’s talk about features. For the vast majority of the people, simply hitting the “auto” button will work. This unit has an air quality sensor, and it will automatically increase its fan speed when it senses that your air quality has declined. Once air quality improves, it’ll slow down its fans. It’s a set-and-forget type of thing. For those who are more hands-on, you can bypass the auto mode and choose your own fan speed. This is useful if you’re running this unit in a room that needs more “reach,” or if you find the white noise of the fans to be soothing. On maximum speed, the unit is still quiet enough to hold a conversation next to it—a box fan is far, far louder. The filtered air is pushed upward, where it can more easily circulate in the room without diluting the denser polluted air it has yet to filter. This helps the purifier do a more efficient job. The air quality monitor lets you know what your room’s air quality is by showing you one of three colors: Blue means your air quality is good; Amber means it’s… well… mediocre; Red means bad. Pretty easy stuff, and easy to see from across the room. The various functions and features are backlit, so even in a dark room you won’t have any trouble selecting what you want. For those who are bothered by the indicator lights, there’s a night-time mode which turns them off. The unit itself is well thought-out and constructed. It doesn’t draw attention to itself, and will blend with most any decor. There’s no remote control that you’ll never use, and the controls are so well laid-out you’ll very likely never need to go digging around for the manual. My brother-in-law owns this unit, and it was on his recommendation that we ordered ours. We liked our first one so much, we quickly bought a second unit to go in our daughter’s bedroom. The difference has been striking. Now we only have to deal with wildfire smoke when we venture outside. The dry eyes and sniffles have reduced dramatically. We liked this air purifier so much that we ended up buying three. The biggest deciding factor was cost of ownership—replacement filters for brands like GermGuardian can cost nearly twice as much. The Winix 5500-2 includes washable pre-filters that can be vacuumed, which helps extend the life of the main filters. We also prefer using this larger unit at lower speeds: it’s quieter, uses less energy, and should help the motor last longer compared to running smaller units on turbo. Excellent value and performance.

Two of us in the house suffer from allergies, and so we decided to try the Winix 5510 in our dusty old house (after we'd vacuumed). We were expecting to be disappointed, but after running it consistently to purifier a larger open space at the threshold of a living and dining room, we noticed a reduction in dust motes and pet dander. The air quality has improved IMHO--if our noses and sinuses and reduced coughing are to be believed. The operating noise level is very quiet on automatic and night settings, but it gets progressively louder as you increase speed. We elevated to waist height it really does the job. We don't use the app, but it's a nice feature if you want it. It's light and easy to move, operate, and maintain. Note: There are replacement filters, but make sure you use the correct part number: 1712-0123-00.

The Winix 5510 is a powerful air purifier that's quiet, easy to operate and packed with features. However the app and documentation leave something to be desired. The 5510 seems to be some kind of one-off middle model that doesn't appear on any of the company's main brochures. I usually see this sort of thing when a model is made for a specific retailer like Costco, or when it has a unique or experimental feature not common to the rest of the product line. If you go to the Winix website, you won't find this one by browsing - you have to put the model number into the search to bring it up. Why is this relevant? If you search for replacement filters using this model number, you won't find many that match, but as far as I can tell the filters are identical to the ones used by the 5500. The packaging did a great job securing the cleaner and it arrived without any damage or issues. No assembly is required for setup, but you do have to remove the cover, the dust mesh and the two filters so you can take them out of their plastic covers and reinstall them. The machine is easy to operate, but the instructions provided are terrible for a couple of reasons. Firstly, the instructions don't actually tell you how to use the device. They explain how to install and replace the filters, and they explain the function of "Auto" and nighttime mode, but they don't tell you how to actually set auto and nighttime mode. It's not difficult to figure out, but the instructions have one job to do, and they spend more text on compliance garbage that users don't read or need, and none telling you how to operate the device. There's a light on the front center of the device. The diagram that labels the various features does not tell you that this is the air quality indicator. There's one sentence that mentions the air quality light in relation to something else, but absolutely nothing to tell you what the different colors mean. Again, it's not hard to figure out that red is bad and green is good, and other colors are something between, but the instructions have a single job and completely fail at it. Lastly, the instructions do not tell you want replacement filters are compatible. Instead they show you in about three different places how to contact the manufacturer to buy the filters from them. A huge part of the reason that I bought this Winix 5510 is because popular brands are easy to find replacement filters for. There's a huge secondary market making knockoff filters that will work mostly as well as OEM. The practice of gatekeeping replacement parts is kind of underhanded in my opinion. I get that low quality replacement media might diminish your opinion of the whole filter, but when you pay half price for something you should know what risk you're taking. For the record the HEPA filter provided is labeled "2522-058-01 Rev.01S" and the carbon pre-filter is labeled "2523-0053-00" Replacements are sold on Amazon, but the Amazon search won't bring them up for some reason. If you use google and search for "116130 5510" it will bring up links back into Amazon for replacement media. The filter has an app control instead of providing a remote control. On the one hand I can understand that having a remote control is just another object that's a hassle to keep track of or to lose and an app can fix that because you're much less likely to lose your phone, and even if you do, you can always install the app on a new phone. Unfortunately Winix decided to take advantage of the app to force you to create an account. At best every account you create for an app like this is a security liability and widens the attack surface for identity theft. When an account gives you significant benefits in return for the sacrifice of your privacy, I can understand it, but when it's just so you don't have to walk across the room to push one of four buttons, it is definitely not in your best interest to create it. The manufacturer should have made the app without a login or account requirement - many manufacturers do. For this reason I have not used the app and cannot recommend its use. The primary reason I purchased this air purifier was to clean the pet smell from a room in my house. I have not had it long enough to say how well it performs, but I will say that the air quality filter went from red to green after a short while but had not significantly reduced the smell. I will update the review after I have had more time with it, to confirm whether it does significantly clean the air in the room. The filter is very quiet unless you crank it up to "Turbo", and even then, all you really hear is the rush of air. For some reason the cat is very attracted to it and keeps reaching up to try to look into the air outlet. With sturdy construction, easy configuration, quiet operation, automatic air quality detection, replacement filters that are likely to be available even after a couple of years and light detection to automatically enable night mode, this filter has all of the features I could ask for except for an app that doesn't require a wholly unnecessary login.

I returned it hopefully they come to pick it up soon, The voltage is not compatible with my country's power supply! Idk why would they sell it worldwide

Nowhere in the product description does it say that this is a 120V product which most of the world does not use. I plugged it in uae and the unit got busted. Waste of hard earned money 845 dhs and wait time. Worse still no warranty in the UAE. Worldwide buyers be warned and stay AWAY from useless products like this.

A very good air purifier with a washable pre filter and carbon filter.Design is okay. Easy to install .Noise level is surprisingly low and in night it automatically reduces fan speed if auto mode is selected. As for allergens I think it’s doing a decent job.Its a good value product overall. Plasmawave feature actually works and odour is drastically reduced.

The seller is lying; this is advertised to come with a remote control, which is why I chose it, and there is no remote control included, and it cannot be connected to an app. BEWARE - Do not recommend buying this if you require remote operation.

Very well made and really works. The high fan speed settings is nothing really loud, I would compare that to the normal family house noise level with TV on and people talking. For more silenced mode you have fan speed 1 and 2.
