The Xtool D7 is an excellent mid-level diagnostic tool with an affordable appetite for update costs.
The Xtool D7 is a very powerful and comprehensive diagnostic tool with an 8 PID count for Live Data, with the option of a normal list of graphs or a 2D overlay of all 8 PIDs that allows the filtering out of non relevant PIDs to be able to focus on the freeze frame action of specific PIDs as they interact with the other selected ones. There is also a grip on the slidebar so I can jump to the frame of interest. I prefer the real-time response from the 16 pin VGA style cable. Although the cable can be difficult to manage at times, the the 9' extentiom cable allows me to watch the screen while under the hood. The buffering lag from Bluetooth devices leave me waiting that half second of response time to see the results of my action. With the functions of this mid-level tool, I can pinpoint the the cause of any or all of the components that are out of balance as well as why they are out of balance and by how far. Cleaning or replacing those components can then be verified, compared and recorded for several reasons, such as to check my work or provide a printout of the diagnostic path taken to resolve the issue and bring the system back into balance. At that point, I have spent a small amount money on parts and invested a moderate amount of money on tools, but the abillity to know which circuit could be causing an imbalance of my vehicle is of much more value then paying someone else to fix it for me, and still only wonder wich components or connectors might fail next. If the need for programming should arise, then I will know why, as well as how to minimize or prevent the need for future programming from here on. When every vehicle I've ever owned has been pre-owned or built from scrap, lol, and now most vehicles on the road are dependent on transisters to maintain a near perfect balance of the smooth function of that vehicle, then learning the language of electronic control of energy through digital communication becomes a valuable skill that can save the avarage novice a bundle of money on diagnostic and repair costs. The D7 has been a game changer for me, to have the knowledge of the function of my vehicles and maintain that balance for a reasonable investment of studying and observing the components involved and know the costly "what as well as why" answer to most any reason for that light to let me know that an issue IS present. A monthly diagnostic is less painful then a trip to the dentist. The customer service team is very dedicated and responded the very next day. They really do care that have I have purchased the device that will provide me with the level of diagnostic interaction that I am needing to assist me in keeping all of my vehicles in as near perfect balance as financially possible. I know from experience with a Launch X431 pad that I tried to use, that the process to success is to beg the development team for support that may never arrive. This is not the case with Xtool. They are very engaged, as well as knowledgeable to the needs of the customer. I am confident that I have made a logical choice in purchasing the D7 from Xtool, and I believe that you will be amazed at the performance and versatility of Xtool products.

Great tool for DIY and basic level mechanics
This is a great tool if you work on your own vehicles, are just starting out as a mechanic, or even starting out as a locksmith. I use this to do a few different things on a daily basis, and for the price, it beats others in the same price. I have an OTOfix scanner that claims to do everything the XTOOL can, but the XTOOL extremely outperforms it in the key fob/immobilizer functions. I have had the XTOOL work on newer cars (2015+) and pull security codes that the other one couldn’t. From what I can see, the Xtool seems to be “compatible” and able to read not only more makes and models, but able to read more modules as well. It is also easier to read as far as the commands for walking you through certain procedures. Most of these budget friendly level scanners are not originally coded/created in English, so the translations can sometimes be harder to understand. Overall, I have had way less issues with translations and clear language with the XTOOL scanner compared to other competitors. Their tech support also has way better English skills than other budget friendly brands as well. It’s user interface is very easy to use, so that is a big part of why I believe if you’re just starting out and don’t want to spend more than 500 bucks, this may be your go to. Everything’s easy to navigate, every once in a while I will be slightly annoyed with the speed of the scan tool, but that would most likely be my biggest complaint. Overall i would say it is very solid and gets things done, whether you’re making keys, doing diagnostics and wanting to see specific voltages, temperatures, pressures etc, or even relearning modules such as TPMS or battery maintenance modules in European vehicles. It for me has covered stuff from American made, to Japanese, to Korean, and done everything I’ve asked of it on European cars. I have friends in the business with snap on and Matco scanners that may have a few more functionalities, but as a basic to moderate level mechanic, I have yet to have something I can’t complete with my XTOOL scanner. I also like the size of the XTool. The scanner itself isn’t too large. Some may like a larger screen, but I feel like the Xtool is quite adequately sized while being compact enough too. My Xtool pulls the same codes, does many of the same functions, and recognizes the same cars as their scan tools can for literally 2% of the price of some of theirs. Mobile mechanics, entry level technicians on most euros, entry to moderate level techs for American/japanese/korean makes, independent shops, and most locksmiths will be able to use this tool and all of the functionalities of it with no issue. If you are a higher level technician, especially for diesel or European stuff, I may look to see if there are other options, but other than that this scan tool will be perfect for most!

Fantastic Tool - Poor language translations
I really like this D7 tool. What a great value for the money. Now that my kids are driving, I have a family with multiple cars, and I do my own repairs to keep my cost of ownership low. I have Honda, Toyota, Scion and GM cars, with the oldest a 2003. So far it has worked on them all. This tool reads and clears the HVAC, Body Control, ABS codes, and shows live values that my $100 code reader could not. Plus the bi-directional active tests are great for narrowing down the problems or for maintenance like brake caliper resets when replacing the brake pads. It even had the ability to do run the fluid bleed process after I replaced the green fluid on the GM rear differential clutch. Another thing I like is that this is a functional touch pad that I can tap the link on a diag code and it will bring up a browser search with additional details. (No more writing down codes and going back inside the house to look them up.) The support for this tool is really great also. Just send them and email and they will get back to you quickly, often within the same day. My only issue with this tool is the poor English translations (See pictures) I don't use the tool often enough where I would feel comfortable clicking-through without reading them first. So I often have to read these messages multiple times in order to understand what they mean. For instance, I assume that the message in one of the pictures should say "This will reset the throttle into Relearn Mode. Turn on the ignition without starting the car" If XTool could put a bit more effort into getting the translations right, this tool would be a home run for me. Also, before you buy this tool, you might want to confirm that it supports your car. One of my cars is a 2018 GMC Acadia, which this tool will only support with the basic IM Readiness and ODB2 functions. Luckily this tool does have full support for the 2019, which is pretty much the same car. So I have to manually select the 2019 to get the tools extensive diag and bi-directional functions to work with my car. Nice product - Glad I bought it!

Great product. Doesn’t include update forever
I purchased this ODB2 by directional scanner after a different scanner failed to be able to retrain my transmission; the XTOOL D7 by directional scanner, knocked out the programming for my Ford. Focus without any issues. It was more expensive for this unit, but I’ve always wanted one anyway, and purchasing this was less expensive than paying the Ford dealership to reprogram the transmission control module; so I kinda look at it like I got it for free. Knowing what I know now, I would’ve just purchased this to begin with. It would’ve saved me time, the only downside is it doesn’t come with lifetime for updates; so the next time I need, it will probably be long enough in the future where I might need to pay a subscription fee to get what I need; hopefully that will be affordable when the time comes; it sure would be nicer if the company would instead base the software updates and time you can get them on how often you use the product and not on a calendar year, this would serve to be more fair for hobbyists like me, but also serve people using this commercially or every day for auto repair. It is likely I won’t need to use the product for at least another year. If the manufacturer reads this review, I was a vendor with Wal-Mart and SAM’s Club for 10 years; I would almost guarantee that part of your returns are due to your subscription software update model driving people in my position to return the item after they’ve used it for what they needed it for and just purchasing it again and repeating a return it in the future when they need to use it again. I think that is despicable behavior, as someone who sold products to consumers; but from my experience, I know that this occurs from time to time. Bottom line, I think the quality, ease of use, and functions of this product make it an essential and amazing tool for anyone working on vehicles; and highly recommended. I absolutely believe that if the current cost of the subscription, it is worth paying for that as well the next time I need to use it; I just wished that wasn’t necessary and that it came with lifetime updates or at least a specific number of times you could use it before having to pay again.

Best value for money yet
I love Xtools; this is my third one and I can tell you, this is the best one yet. This tool performs on par with scanners 3 to 4 times its value. I spent 6 hours testing this scanner n multiple vehicles and I am impressed. Pros: The scanner its self is a computer. It comes with everything that is required for proper operation. It is built into a hard shock proof body. The scanner comes with a hard carrying case that can withstand drops... yes, I tested it from 6 feet (scanner in the carrying case). It comes with 39 special functions, including IMMO. Did I mention it has IMMO... I know I did, but it must ne mentioned again. It has IMMO... a scanner under 400 bucks. It auto detects the VIN with no issues... even recorded my mileage. Can prepare and send reports to any email; great feature ot have. Many more impressive features. Interface is very easy to use. Cons: Unfortunately, only 3 years of free updates. I am used to lifetime updates CPU an bit slow. Needs a bit more RAM. But hey, it's u der 400 bucks. Interface not too fancy. But hey, it's under 400 bucks. This is a real practical scanner that can serve a professional shop, but would be exciting in thw hands of a DIYer. Recommend buying. Worth 10 stars.

Doesn't Cover What it Should, Competitors Offer Free Lifetime Upgrades
The scanner hardware is nice (an Android tablet), and it's rugged. As for the software, it covers oodles of car brands – some I’d never even heard of – and the company provides very frequent updates. That's good. I did have to buy a 15-foot computer video cable so I can lay under the car with the scanner and listen while actuating components (the provided OBDII cable reaches only as far as the driver's seat). And good luck connecting to a printer if yours is more than a couple of years old. HOWEVER ... in some cases, it falls short of even basic expectations. Today’s problem is that it won’t perform an ABS bleed on a 1997 Chevrolet K2500 4x4. That’s a very widely used system that’s been around for 30 years or so. I thought maybe I followed the wrong menu or had a bad connection, but a disappointing email response from the manufacturer confirmed they don’t support that function for those vehicles! That capability should be a no-brainer for a bidirectional scanner that’s otherwise so capable. So, I’ll continue to use it for what I can. I’m just not sure I’ll be paying for their annual access subscription when my initial trial period is done. Update, December 2025: Competition has changed the scanner landscape. My second annual $99 XTool subscription is fast approaching, but I've found other scanners for under $400 offering similar or superior capabilities that include free lifetime updates and Bluetooth (so no video cable required). Thus, if I let the XTool die on the vine by declining the updates, I'll save $99 immediately and each year in the future. So the new scanner will pay for itself in four years or less, and after that it's all gravy. (If the annual fee were, say, $25 it could be a different story -- but it's not.) My guess it that I'll end up relegating this four-year-old scanner to a closet shelf and then tossing it after a few years of disuse. I could give it to my son -- but he'd have to start right away with the $99 per year updates so he may as well buy the competitor's scanner just like me. Update, January 2026: Here's some good news for those who think their scanners may have bricked themselves. If the scanner is completely unresponsive, charge it up anyway (overnight if possible). Then find the TINY hole next to the charging (USB) socket. There's a reset button inside that hole. I inserted the eye end of a sewing needle (one of the few things that will fit) and pressed gently. I could feel the pushbutton switch inside actuate and release, and the scanner came back from the dead. It's worth a shot.

A lot of scanner for the price
The D7 scanner is a solid device, not a cheap tablet like some others on the market. It has rubber bumpers on the corner to help protect it. I like that it came in a custom fit case that had a space for everything. I just don’t have room in the toolbox for a bunch of loose cables and adapters. I bought this unit as an upgrade to a lower level Xtool to help diagnose an issue with the brake lights constantly being on in our 2012 Jeep Compass. Since it wasn’t a simple issue with just a brake switch, I needed a way to see what the car computer thought was going on. The D7 scanner gave me the live data view to see that the car was reporting that the brake pedal was pressed at all times, even though it wasn’t . Turns out it was an issue with the totally integrated power module under the hood. The scanner was essential in ruling out a short or ground issue by seeing the live sensor data. It also gave us the ability to bleed the brakes using the ABS pump which is something that was on the maintenance schedule. The scanner came nicely packaged and was easy to set up. I created an Xtool account directly from the tablet and it immediately allowed me to download the vehicle definition updates from their online update site. One of the features that I really like is the way it creates a diagnostics report whenever you scan a vehicle and then you can directly email the reports from the tablet. You can customize the reports with a logo and business name if you are running a shop, for me it was just nice to have a PDF to refer to. I tried the scanner on all of my vehicles just to see if it truly was compatible. It auto detected my 2012 Jeep Compass, 2018 Volvo XC90, required a manual input of the VIN for my 2004 Jeep WJ but that is a limitation of that year Jeep since it isn’t coded in the ECU, and failed to detect my brand new 2025 Subaru Outback. I was wondering how it would work on the 2025 since it was a brand new model year, the vehicle has 460 miles on it. The 2025 has a warranty for 3 years so I hope I don’t need to scan it but I was impressed to learn that if I used the OBD II vehicle option on the scanner, it bypassed the auto VIN function and just put me into an OBD II standards based scanner. It was not only able to read the status of fault codes but also gave me the live data which I didn’t expect. Attached is a video that shows the scanner reading and graphing the throttle position as I press the pedal. I don’t have a shop but do take care of all of our vehicles. A dealer will easily charge you more in diagnostic fees than the cost of buying your own scanner. Plus, it gives you the freedom to use it whenever you want.
