No, side shields are clear, only intended as peripheral protection

Can you remove side shields?

They are held in with some small rivets. They can be removed, but if you want them gone you really should just buy a different sort of glasses. I like the style, but the side shields are meant to stay there.

How do they compare to didymium?

These work well in the hot shop working in front of a furnace, but I'm not sure how effective they would be with a torch, lampworking. I believe didymium is used for a reason, as expensive as they may be. I'm not well enough informed on the subject. But protect your eyes, whatever the cost.
