I'm a us size 8.5 wide. should i purchase a size 9? or will the 8.5 fit ok?

At least 9 wide. Your normal street wear shoes are normally used walking on flat ground, out on the trails you often find yourself walking downhill--your foot slides forward a bit and if your shoes don't have enough space your toes press against the end of the shoe. I've encountered a person that had a toenail fall off because they wore their normal size on a long hike, and more than one with lesser injuries. Note that this is in no way specific to these shoes, you oversize all hiking shoes & boots.

the shoe says mens but when you go to check out it says womens which is it?

It depends on the size. A women’s 9 is a men’s 7.
