Stellar 100% Pure Grass Fed Lard : Flavorful, Versatile, but Tricky Packaging
Stellar 100% Pure Grass Fed Lard (5 lbs): High-Quality, Versatile, but Packaging Needs Work I recently purchased the Stellar 100% Pure Grass Fed Lard (5 lbs, food-grade bucket) to use in my cooking and baking, drawn by its promise of purity and grass-fed sourcing. This lard has proven to be a flavorful and versatile addition to my kitchen, though some packaging issues slightly dampen the experience. Ease of Use: 4/5 The lard is easy to work with, arriving as a smooth, white, semi-solid fat that scoops effortlessly for cooking or baking. It melts quickly into a clear liquid, perfect for frying or sautéing, and blends well into doughs for baking. I found it simple to portion into smaller containers for daily use, as recommended by an Amazon reviewer who froze 1-pound packages for convenience. However, the bucket’s lid is notoriously difficult to open, with multiple reviewers complaining it took pliers or excessive force, one even saying, “I’m ready to get out my drill!” I struggled for about 10 minutes before prying it open, slightly damaging the lid, which makes storage less secure. Once opened, it’s best to refrigerate or freeze to maintain freshness. Flavor and Culinary Performance: 4.5/5 The flavor is exceptional—clean, mildly savory, and buttery, with no off-putting aftertaste, unlike cheaper supermarket lards. I used it to fry eggs, make pie crusts, and roast vegetables, and it delivered crispy textures and a rich, gourmet depth to every dish. Its high smoke point (370°F) makes it ideal for high-heat cooking, as noted on Amazon, producing “golden, crispy fried foods” and “flaky pie crusts.” An Amazon reviewer praised its use in biscuits and tortillas, calling them “scrumptious,” and I agree—my pie crusts were the flakiest I’ve ever made. The lard’s purity (100% pork fat, no additives) enhances flavors without overpowering, though one reviewer noted it’s “weird” how it breaks apart like “magnetized iron shavings” when scooped, which I also noticed but found melted smoothly. Quality and Sourcing: 4/5 Stellar’s lard is crafted from 100% pure, grass-fed pork fat, free of preservatives or artificial ingredients, which aligns with my preference for clean, natural products. The grass-fed claim suggests higher vitamin D content (around 1000 IU per tablespoon, depending on the pigs’ diet and sunlight exposure), making it a healthier alternative to vegetable oils or butter for some users. However, one Amazon reviewer questioned the feasibility of fully grass-fed pigs, noting that pigs aren’t naturally suited to a grass-only diet, which raises some skepticism about the marketing. My batch was pure white, odorless, and smooth, as described by a reviewer who used it for soap-making, but another reported a “putrid” smell in a bad batch, suggesting occasional quality control issues. Thankfully, my experience was positive, and Stellar’s customer service replaced a rancid batch for another user, which is reassuring. Versatility: 5/5 This lard is a kitchen workhorse. I’ve used it for frying chicken, baking biscuits, and even seasoning cast-iron pans, and it performs flawlessly across sweet and savory recipes. Its versatility extends beyond cooking—one reviewer used it for skincare, noting benefits for acne and skin elasticity, though I stuck to culinary uses. It’s also praised for soap-making, producing a clean, high-quality result. The 5-pound bucket is ideal for frequent cooks, and its eco-friendly packaging (recyclable bucket) aligns with sustainable practices, though availability is limited in some regions, per IBspot. Value for Money: 4/5 At around $20–$30 for 5 pounds (based on Amazon and Walmart listings), this lard is a great value compared to smaller, pricier jars from brands like Fatworks. Customers call it “economical” and “better quality than supermarket lard,” with one noting it’s “much more affordable than glass jar brands.” However, some felt ripped off by the bucket appearing half-full, though it still weighs the advertised 5 pounds, as clarified by a reviewer: “It may seem half empty, but you’re getting what you paid for.” The high price compared to non-grass-fed lard and the difficult lid slightly reduce its value, but the quality and quantity make it cost-effective for regular use. Final Verdict: Stellar 100% Pure Grass Fed Lard (5 lbs) is a top-tier cooking fat that delivers rich flavor, versatility, and health benefits for home cooks and bakers. Its clean, buttery taste and high smoke point make it perfect for frying, baking, and more, while its grass-fed sourcing adds nutritional appeal. The hard-to-open bucket and occasional quality concerns (like rancidity or misleading “half-full” appearance) are drawbacks, but Stellar’s customer service seems responsive. I highly recommend it for anyone seeking a premium, natural lard for culinary or even cosmetic uses, but be prepared to wrestle with the lid and store it properly.

Beware…..You don’t receive what you paid for!
It was very difficult to open but yet arrived half empty and looking like it had melted and solidified a couple times. I weighed the lard and it’s 1.5 pounds not 3 and there’s no option for returns. What a horrible waste of money and at this point none of us can afford to lose money on scam items.

No more shortening for me!
I’ve used this in several recipes now and I am extremely happy with the results. I will be buying this instead of shortening from now on.

Tastes great
As other people have said the bucket is too big for the amount of lard you get. It look like it had been melted and return to solid.
