I have started film photography and this Sekonic Flashmate has been an essential purchase. Some of the retro cameras I have don’t have a light meter. I tried using a phone app but the results were not always consistently good. This Sekonic has been very reliable. It is simple to operate and seems sturdy enough. I would say the price is a little high but it is definitely a quality bit of kit, so worth investing in it.

As others have said this meter works brilliantly. I just wish the build quality was better. It's a fairly expensive bit of kit but it feels VERY cheap and plasticy. I'd expect something that's a bit more robust in the hand for the price but it's a touch smaller than I expected and works well. I generally shoot at 1/200s which is the sync speed for my camera but the meter won't allow you to set that as the shutter speed out of the box - worth going into the custom functions to change it to smaller stops so there's a bit more granular control. Would be 5 stars if the build quality was more in line with the price.

Quite a lightweight but works really well in the studio and also if I’m location shooting outside. Easy to use, accurate - what more do you need?

The light meter seems to work well, I got it mostly for the incident flash metering and that has worked perfectly. The unit itself is quite light even with the batteries installed, and it is small enough to fit in a bigger pocket. It has enough different modes for me and operation is quite simple. Glad I bought it, has made studio flash use a lot easier.

I'm absolutely glad I bought this tool. Yes, it really is a tool... it makes setting up multiple lights a lot easier than without a light meter. Sure, trial-and-error works too, but it really takes a lot longer to make it perfect than with metering the light. I also bought the Lumidisc add-on, but haven't really used it so far, so maybe that is an unnecessary purchase. What I also ordered, via Amazon.com - as it is not available on Amazon.nl - is a silicone skin to protect the light meter. Ok, the customs fees and import taxes make it quite expensive, but it helps to protect the cheap plastic enclosure of the Sekonic Flashmate L-308X. I can totally recommend this tool to anyone who takes using studio strobes or speedlites seriously.
