Q: Can anyone tell me why my kettle is changing colour from the bottom up, and advise me on how to clean it?

Mine has done the same. It's down to the heat slowly baking(?) the enamel coating... My blue kettle has a band more greenish blue near the base whilst the upper part is still blue. I would not advise trying to scrape clean or otherwise remove the discolouration as all you'll end up with is scratched colour coating. Doesn't affect the kettle's performance. How a black one might fair I've no idea, but I'm comfortable with my slightly faded(?) blue one.

Q: What is the diameter of the base please?

Just measured it. Base diameter a tad short of 20cm or 8 inches.

Q: Is this induction kettle?

This is a lightweight metallic kettle. It is designed for heating with a fire-like heat source. I have a sneaking feeling it is too thin and light to trigger an induction hob. Of course I may be wrong.

Q: Is the lid supposed to come off?! Mine doesn't ...

Yes the lid lifts off. You have to hold the knob on the top of the lid and pull it off. They can be a little stiff when new.
