Works fine not on wrist...
I have been a user of the Withings wifi scales for a number of years and they are superb so I have been on the look out for an activity tracker to compliment them. About 18 months ago I gave the Nike Fuelband a try and whilst it's a nice bit of kit it is a little short on power, needing a daily recharge and a physical connection to one's pc for sync. The Pulse is a far better piece of cake it not only tracks steps/kcals/distance/sleep/heart rate/blood oxygen, it also lasts several days on a single charge and even more crucially to me, it uses a micro-usb charger (same as most android phones and the kindle)... all this combined with bluetooth sync to your iOS/android device pretty much makes it the definitive device of its class! As mentioned in other reviews, it needs to be kept away from water, but it is ideally used by being put in your pocket during the day and on the included wristband at night, personally i use the belt clip in pocket for a bit of extra protection as it is largly useless to clip to ones belt (a friend lost his within days). Having used this for a month now I feel I can recommend it. A great compliment to the scales and even without then a superb motivator that might well suit those who prefer not to wear a wrist device, and for those who do, well that's what the included strap is for.

Nice Idea, Let down by poor hardware
After using the device for a few days, it’s a bit of a disappointment. The steps/distance function only seems to work if you are walking at a brisk pace. The recording accuracy is suspect as the distance for a known walks was in error by at least 20%. The recording of my lunch time runs was no better. The time function seems to assume you will be running all the time, and that you do not to have to cross busy roads where you may have to pause for traffic or crossing lights to change. Again the distance measured was out by 30% (over estimation). Battery life is claimed to be 2 weeks “for average use”, at best mine lasted 5 days on one charge. It has an exposed USB charging port that is not weather protected, so means you need to keep the device dry … a bit difficult to do in the British climate where you do expect to get wet. Measurement of heart rate/ O2 level requires you to remove the device from the cradle and press your finger on the sensor. I found the results to be hit and miss – sometimes it worked and gave sensible results. I’m not convinced that the clasp on the wrist strap is robust enough to hold the device – frequent insertions and removals will probably means it will work lose in time. With these faults I can’t take the data recorded by the device seriously and in my view the device is not fit for its intended purpose.

Chewed by the dog!
This was a replacement for a Fitbit (belt clip) monitor which I thought I had lost. Hence the Withings Pulse to go with my Withings scales given as a Christmas present. The activity wrist band worked fine for a week. As I was worried that the monitor would pop[p out of the wrist strap, I decide to put it onto its (clothes) clip. Unfortunately the strength on the clip wasn't brilliant and my hand disturbed it where it was clipped onto my trouser pocket and it flipped off. During dinner that evening I heard a crunching noise from below the table and found that my little dog was happily chewing on the monitor. It was a very expensive purchase for only one weeks wear. I can't therefore thoroughly appraise its usefulness as I had it for a very short time. But I was worried that the wrist band wasn't all that strong to hold the monitor and when I changed to the clothes clip I was very disappointed that it was dislodged so easily. So beware that you attach it well especially when you are using the clothes clip. I then tried the Polar loop. Less problems than most adjusting the wrist band, and when loose can be worn with a watch or on the other wrist as a bangle. It has its own problems: the battery life is very short and needs really to be recharged every 4 days; there seems no ability to transfer data unless its attached and 'synced ' to a PC; worst still the Polar software looks OK but doesn't allow the data to be downloaded. What a waste. By the way my Fitbit turned up unexpectedly so I have on my belt and checking my activity. One week + on battery and when recharging automatically updates my activity level.

Nice device! I like it but it had a hardware defect so getting a replacement device! Still a great device when it worked briefly
It's a really clever device and I like the idea of physiological monitoring. Unfortunately the device had a hardware defect which came to light after I started it up. I followed the Quickstart instructions, charged it up as well to full capacity then initialized it and connected it to the HealthMate Withings app. No problems so far. It did become apparent that it did not record activities consistently and seemed to freeze. The icing on the cake was the Error 1 message on screen. That got me Googling and working the problem. The Withings FAQ on their support site are really good and I followed the steps for this particular error message. It did recur and rebooting the device simply did not do the trick. I contacted Withings by webmail and got an email reply soon after. They suspected a hardware defect and send me a voucher for a replacement device to be order from the Withings store directly which I did. Mailing instructions to Withings in France were included in the email. I carved up the money for the recorded mail to France. They would charge for the new device if you don't return the defective one. And if you don't pay up would deactivate the device remotely. That sounds spooky but fair enough. I hope there's no spike mic or cam in the device. I hope that the replacement device will work if not third time lucky. If bad luck continues I tend to loose interest in devices. I must admit that the Withings range of products are great and I have a blood pressure monitor and a wireless scale which helps keeping us fit.

This is my first purchase of any of the Withings products. The Pulse was everything I wanted in a tracker and the accuracy was excellent. I liked the sleep tracking feature, the web app is very user friendly and informative and it is very compact! The watchband provided is good quality and excellent for wearing at night when using the sleep tracker. The Pulse is not very accurate using the watchband attachment for daily walking activity though. So I used the also supplied beltclip attachment instead. That's where the issue with this tracker comes into play. The beltclip attachment is made of a very cheap, and flimsy rubber. The Pulse fits snuggly into the attachment the first few times of use, but the rubber quickly stretches out and the Pulse pops out very easily. I really thought at first that the beltclip attachment would be most beneficial since the tracker is very small and this attachment seemed ideal for wearing all day during my work, sports, etc. DON'T TRUST THE BELTCLIP!! Within a few days of using this, the tracker popped out of the beltclip and I lost it at a restaurant. Luckily it was turned in and I was able to recover it that time, however, it happened several other times until I was on the golf course and once again it popped out of the beltclip attachment. That was the last time I saw my Withings Pulse. Very disappointing that Withings chose to provide such a cheap attachment for such a great activity tracker. Hopefully Withings is getting enough feedback on this that they will consider a design change to ensure they keep otherwise satisfied customers. I'll update at a later date as I plan to contact their Customer Service Dept to see if they would be willing to provide some compensation for this design flaw. UPDATE: June 17, 2015 - I contacted Customer Service the evening of my previous post and provided them the feedback that I entered from my review above. Less than 12 hours later Withings Customer Service had contacted me via email and thanked me for the feedback and offered me a one time replacement Pulse 02!! They communicated with me several times during that same day to ensure that I had all the information needed to place my replacement order and I just received my new replacement today!! I certainly appreciate the professionalism and prompt response from Withings Customer Service and their willingness to retain a customer. As I stated above the product is excellent quality and works very well with their website. I couldn't be happier with the results and would highly recommend this activity tracker. I've updated my star rating to a 5 as well! Thanks Withings!!
