A lamp (diya) symbolises knowledge. An ignorant person would often remain in dark and wouldn't be able to keep a check on the events happening around him. It is only when he feels the need to gain some knowledge that he will realise the purpose of his existence. And hence in this case, a diya/jyot signifies the removal of ignorance through knowledge.Lighting this lamp daily cleanses the aura of the place where it is lit. The brass container need to be filled with ghee (clarified butter) and a cotton wick is placed in it. The top container needs to be half filled with water and a camphor tablet needs to be put in it. Then the lamp is lighted. The water boils with the heat and the camphor evaporates and the vibrations of camphor and ghee together clear any negative energy in the place and spreads positive vibrations.
