PEMP Wireless Carplay retrofit and Airplay Android Auto MMI Box Use The OEM Microphone for BMW F01 F07 F10 F12 F15 F20 F30 F25 F48 NBT (NBT)

This is the second CarPlay retrofit I’ve used on my 2017 X1. The first, a different brand in a black case, failed after a few months. I have higher expectations for this one. It seems better quality. Installation was extremely easy. It took me about a half hour with my prior experience removing the trim and radio. I tried using the factory mic and it sounded weak. I used the included one and it was an improvement. I stuck it to the bottom of the center bezel next to the led light and it sounds fine there away from the vents and wind. Overall I would recommend this retrofit box. Also if it matters you can still access the factory audio control module to make changes with coding apps, which the other brand seemed to block communication.

First install was great, no issues. Everything was working for about 5 days, then there were problems. 1st issue was that the interface for the carplay/android auto will only prompt by itself meaning that there is no option on the stock vehicle to enter that interface. As a result, if you press any buttons like a media button or the radio that takes you out the of the interface, you cannot get back in unless someone calls your or something else that prompts the interface. I had to constantly disconnect and reconnect my phone to the unit to prompt it. After a week, the carplay stopped working completely. I found a workaround where I connected the unit to the bluetooth on my phone and load the display as carplay so the audio is all messed up. Then, the display as carplay stopped working completely and the bluetooth would also cut out. I would highly recommend a different unit to save yourself the trouble

***UPDATE*** After taking a longer trip in the car and listening to something other than music (podcasts), and the electronic buzzing noise is much more noticeable and makes podcast listening difficult to enjoy. Not sure if there is a fix for the buzzing (certainly don't have the buzz through the OEM bluetooth), but I had to reduce from 5 stars to 4 stars as a result. ***ORIGINAL*** This has been a great product. If you are happy with your factory screen and no touch, this works absolutely great. Pros: -Super Easy Install -Apple CarPlay on stock Screen -Calls through factory microphone (although an extra one was included in the box that I didn't use) -Backup camera and parking sensor screens all work as expected Cons: -Slight electronic noise that I didn't notice previously -Really makes me want a touch screen (there's a chance I'll return this and try the android touch screen that PEMP makes) -Using the stock infotainment dial feels a little cumbersome with the CarPlay UI (not fault of the MMI unit, just a general con)

This product works great just like described. The only thing I can’t seem to get working is the screen mirroring but that’s no big deal. For those complaining about mic quality or sound quality I don’t know what they’re talking about. I think my sound quality improved with this product. You cant use the radio in your car in CarPlay but simple solution is to download the iHeart radio app and works perfect. You do not need to spend $$$ on bimmerlink this product is just as good. Last thing if you have the bigger head unit like me a good place for the mmi is to the right side of the top AC vent just have to push it through kinda tough but it goes and lots of room there.

Wanted to put out a review to help any BMW X5 E70 owners. The unit is very responsive. You do need to use the provided mic unfortunately and the AUX in center console. Still figuring out where to hide the box. It is a very easy install in that you only have to unplug one connection from the back of the stereo unit. You do need to use some caution though. You need to remove the AC/Heat module to get stereo unit out. If you put everything back in and your AC/Heat module doesn't light up or work, it's one of the connectors in the back that is the issue. It is the funky clip. It just does not seat completely tight. I went through the entire car checking every fuse to figure this out at the end. You can slide the plug out of the clip, then just plug it in and all should be good. I still need to get either a new clip or figure a way to secure it in there. I don't think it will go anywhere though. Hope this helps anyone else looking to purchase!

I decided to try this unit out because it was half the price of the competitors at Bimmertech. The install was fairly straightforward and the company has their own YouTube channel where they have install videos for almost every unit they sell. I personally had issues because there was no slack in wiring harness from the factory so my install took way longer than it should have because I had to remove the entire center console to get enough slack. That has nothing to do with this unit or the plug and play cables they sent. On my first try I forgot to move over the fiber optic cable from the oem harness into the pemp harness and so some of my display options weren’t working like headsup display. I contacted PEMP customer service and they were quick to respond. I went back and moved over the cable and got everything working. CarPlay works as it should, you only need to connect the device manually once and then everytime you start the car up it will automatically start up CarPlay. When it works it’s great and you would think it’s factory oem. However there were minor quirks that caused me to give it three stars. I use the Hey Siri function a lot so I can dictate texts and use my phone etc. This unit does not use the cars OEM mic and Bluetooth and cause caused tons of problems with hey Siri. It never understood what I was trying to say and it was a headache. I even bought an upgraded external mic to see if that helped end it didn’t. Another issue I had was when putting the car back in drive from reverse the screen would sometimes black out and I would have to manually switch back and forth between oem screen back to PEMP screen to get it work. It happened a few times a week which was annoying. I will say that PEMP customer service is pretty good and respond within a day and they were willing to try to help me out with the Hey Siri issues which is why I didn’t give a lower rating. I actually ended up exchanging the box for the upgraded 10.25 screen this week. I just installed the android screen and I can see an immediate different with the hey Siri option. I’ll continue testing on the android screen and leave a review there. So for half the price of bimmertech and if you don’t use Hey Siri, I would highly recommend this product. I appreciate the responsiveness of the customer service and the fact that they have a YouTube channel that they also are active on is great.

Easy to install works perfect you can also Bluetooth and play music to your oem radio and have CarPlay connected still for better sound quality
