Vegetarian MREs
These are essentially MREs without meat or meat by products. About me: I have been buying emergency food forever and I eat the product and try it out as soon as I get it. I have experience with these, MREs, Camping Food, and "survival food" I would put Survival Food at the bottom of this list without questions. It's mostly overpriced carbs and I think the marketing is designed to take advantage of people trying to prepare for an emergency. MRE's and Camping Food are really good and this product is very similar except without meat. About this product: Almost identical to an MRE but (no heaters! and did I mention? No meat :) The peanut butter and jams are identical to those in MREs and are good. Don't make a mess! the feeble napkin isn't going to be enough but the utensils etc. are a nice touch Pros: Very well packaged No meat if your vegetarian but if you're starving, you shouldn't discriminate Very good value for your money....my first one I opened had 9 distinct items Enough calories for a day....so 10 = 10 days Cons: No meat (many MREs have meat and I want a lot of protein in an emergency) Entrees taste pretty good but prior to cooking, the consistency is disgusting....a paste essentially Entrees require a little water and cooking in a pot (in my opinion) to make them edible Entrees are soups and stews....(canned versions might be just as good, cheaper and better) Final thoughts: I opened and had 1/2 of one for lunch right after they arrived. I had #5 the Lentil Stew. Before heating in a small pot, it was a nasty paste. After adding a little water and cooking, it was perfectly edible and pretty decent. I ate the Oatmeal cookie which is pictured too....it was dry but the taste was pretty good. I broke the Vegetable Crackers into my Lentil Stew as they were pretty bland but not horrible. They made the meal more substantial and filled me up (6 ft 2in 225) I would keep a couple of cases on hand. They cost less than MREs and have 2 entrees as opposed to one. They do not come with heaters so be aware....they can be eaten without cooking but I do not suggest that. These are good on the go and the packaging is amazing. If you're just building a stockpile at home, you may just want to accumulate canned goods, soups, etc as this might be cheaper. However, considering the cost I got was under $5 per pouch, you are not getting ripped off like much of the phony "survival" food out there which is lots of carbs, mac and chz and rice. I keep cases of MREs and will add a few of these b/c of the value. They are also good to keep in your vehicle just in case.

The Florida panhandlers are thankful, mostly.
I hand these to the "just hungry" panhandlers on street corners. A full day's calories for a reasonable price.

HDR in good shape, almost 4 years old.
These are meant for starving people of undetermined origin and you have to set expectations as such. These probably came from some government auctions for items that either failed inspection or the government didn't want to pay to inspect. (Edit: Turns out the 2021 rations were revamped to make them more versatile in who they can feed, so maybe that's why they weren't retained. I see a couple other misconceptions in the reviews... Inspection dates are typically 3 years past the manufacture date. So these are all past their "best by dates.") My box arrived in perfect condition. SoPakCo manufacturer. Inspection date of 6/22. Got 2 each of all five menus. Items also seemed perfect. These have a practical life of maybe 7 year, maybe as much as 10, so figure 3 years left or 6 if kept reliability cool. Not going write too much on the detail details, but 2 cookies, 2 entrees, 1 authentic Pop Tart, 1 pack of "vegetable" crackers and peanut butter (amazing) and strawberry jam. Wish it had more crackers and less cookie. Spoon, salt, pepper, red pepper, sugar, matches, paper towel and moist towelettes. My kids love everything in these bags. The mains aren't anything to write home about, but palatable if warm. I got this as fun camping food as these aren't really long term storage items.

This is a bargain.
This is my second order of Humanitarian Daily Rations. If you can get past the lack of meat or variety, these are not bad and a couple I have found very good. I like the Barley Stew. The oatmeal and shortbread cookies are always good. I have found a couple of packages that only had one Pop Tart, another had unfrosted strawberry Pop Tarts instead of brown sugar and cinnamon and yet another package had actual name brand Fig Newtons instead of one of the cookies. I guess some might say HDR's are like a box of chocolates. However it is the price that is fantastic. For $4.50 U.S. per day you cannot beat it. I will be buying more although at some point I want to try the Halal and Kosher rations. You never know what your going to get.
