Fine water softener.
Working great so far (4 months). Will update with any problems. Installation was simple.

It works
I have purchased this product several times and use it regularly every six months in my water softener. It appears to work well and I’ve had no issues.

Great choice.
These are quality softeners (I’ve had 2 so far at 2 different houses that I’ve lived in). They do a great job of treating the water, and they have a selectable range of softness. Set it and forget it. The only nit I have to pick is that the salt level tube is so close to the media tank near the back corner that it will keep the salt from getting back there. It never affected the operation of the unit though. I think it’s amazing that Amazon will deliver these right to your front door; they’ve done it for me twice. Thanks Amazon!

Extremely old mechanism but it does work
I bought this to replace a 15 year-old water softener from Sears (Kenmore range). Surprise, surprise it's exactly the same mechanism! The display panel is new (but offers no real improvements in functionality) but otherwise the mechanics are a photocopy of the older machine. Because of this I can tell you a couple of defects that are easily managed. First, there is a microswitch on the mechanism which is a nylon button scraping along a revolving metal disk that turns every time the water softener is back-washed. This button wears down over time and when it fails the back-wash cycle stops and a warning light comes on. However, it turns out to be an easy fix - I bought a bag of these switches for $15 and I replace the switch every 3-4 years (easily accessed and held in place by two screws). Second, I did have a case failure (a split) in the mechanism. This sprayed water everywhere and I used the shutoff valve to temporarily stop the problem. Incredibly I was able to find the part at a reasonable price from Sears but I suspect most of the online repair shops carry the same part. I've only had to do this once in 15 years and it might've been a casting error (we do not have high water pressure issues). Aside from the two issues mentioned above, the water softener has worked perfectly over the years. The reason for replacement is that water hardness has begun to increase which indicates the ion exchange tower is tired/failing. The only stand-out feature missing from this unit is a wifi connection to tell me when the unit is running low on salt. My water softener is located in the garage and I typically forget to check. However, it wasn't worth paying a fortune for this feature. The ion exchange (bead) tower is not as big as the one fitted to my earlier SEARS model. This is something of a concern to me and I'll update this review if I see any differences in flow rate/pressure and effectiveness. I would say this unit is a good buy, especially if it's on sale. I It's by no means the "best of the best" but considering I was replacing an older unit (rather than a new install) it was the simplest and most obvious solution for me.

Saves salt by sensing how much water is used
Now a month after installing I am pleased to say this was a great purchase. I shopped around for a replacement for my 15+ year old Whirlpool, and ended up buying the same unit again. Many softeners have a clock and regenerate on a fixed schedule whether or not you are using water. My water use varies as I travel sporadically and fill the hot tub several times, so the metered use makes sense. Taking out the old WHES40 revealed some iron in the system as I have well water. This model has a prewash mode that you can set, flushing out iron or other deposits. Weird that you need to download the instruction manual to set this up as the installation manual that came with it makes no mention of it. I found connecting 1 inch sweat copper pipe to this machine was easy, just pay attention to their warning not to put any tension on the fittings. My new unit came with a redundant extra bypass valve and connection hardware. I can't tell if this was a mistake or something they do for everyone as some have trouble with the first set of pipes? I like the o-ring connections that require no tools for assembly. Two people can easily get the box into the basement, but the entire bottom of the box was sealed with just one measly piece of tape that had given up before delivery. It seems Whirlpool can invest a few cents and put more tape across all the seams of their box so their products get delivered in one piece. I notice that after 15 years the softener remains the same, except you can now subscribe to three bottles of their cleaner each year to extend the warranty by five years. Whoever put the stickers on this machine was in a big hurry as they are not square. Defects are quite minor as I intend to get two decades of soft water out of my 40 grain well water thanks to Whirlpool.

Excellent Replacement for Kenmore
Softens water well. Easy to install. Uses very little salt. After a lot of research this softener ended up being a great value. So far quality seems very good. It arrived in great shape and had more than expected for my plumber to install. If you had a Kenmore you can almost set it in without any adjustment to plumbing and DIY. When we finally opened it on date plumber was available, it had more than I expected in extra parts needed to install. Wish they had that in the description as I'd spent some money ahead of plumber to be sure he had everything needed to install that day. Somehow had a negative view of Whirlpool appliances as being low end and the reviews were not great. Can imagine why and decided it might be helpful to skeptics to hear how absolutely thrilled I am to have soft water back and love everything about this appliance and how Amazon handled the delivery.

Works well but is expensive. I had thought it was for 2 otherwise I wouldn't have bought it. Would have researched other products.
