Writing for Short Film: In the Hollywood style. In the European way. Archplot & Miniplot : Fandos, Diego, von Tunzelman, Justin: desertcart.co.uk: Books Review: Highly recommend - This is a great resource for those looking to get to know the art of short films! Such an incredible amount of recommended short films from someone who clearly knows what they're talking about, and I loved reading the interviews with professionals too. Will definitely be using this advice! Review: Best book on how to write short films - Refreshing and resonant ideas on how to understand and write short films (as opposed to longer format). I find it rare to have a dedicated book on short films with well thought through theories with plenty of inspiring short films examples. High recommend and can’t wait for the 2nd edition.

Lots of examples
What I particularly liked about this book were the many examples of free-to-watch short films that the writer uses to explain his theories about writing short films. This makes the theories super easy to digest. A film tutor and filmmaker, the author has a lot of experience dealing with short films. A very good resource for short script writers.

The book is filled with very clear explanations and useful tips. The interviews with these very talented people are extremely interesting: they give practical advice and share their own experiences and feelings. And the links to the short films are a treasure.

I came up to this book just by chance, but I’m really happy I read it. It has sections both on conventional (archplot) and non conventional (mini plot / anti plot) storytelling. It has theory, guidelines, practical advices, pitfalls. Lots of references to short films WITH Vimeo/YouTube links to them. The writer assumes you know basic dramatic structure, so it’s best to read it with another book that covers it (maybe Linda J. Cowgill’s “Writing Short Films”) Don’t get confused with the title, the book doesn’t have much to do with Hollywood vs European filmmaking. It’s an excellent guide on writing good short films from a cinema school teacher.
