I've been a big audiophile for about 25 years, thanks to being raised in an environment that put a strong emphasis on audio quality. Anywho, I recently purchased a used set of Beyerdynamic DT770 80ohms to compliment my Logitech Z-5500 system for those times when I couldn't use the speaker system itself. The ear pads that came with it were never changed - so they were gnarly and breaking apart. I really balked at paying $40 for set of freaking foam pads. So I bought Chinese made ones for $3 right from China. What an utter mistake; I swear I could hear what was going on outside of the headphones better WITH the headphones on than off, lol. (The sound leak was that bad - utterly defeating the purpose of NOISE ISOLATING HEADPHONES) I tossed those, and kept the rotten old ones on - at least they still sealed out noise and kept everything in that was suppose to be. I had seen that many people recommended the Brainwavz HM5 pads for the DT770 - they are a great ear pad but unfortunately they were not as isolating/sealing as the original pads. Comfort was great, but keep in mind that changing the ear pads WILL change the sound-stage and tonal effects of headphones. Amazon has always been great with returns - so I've returned the HM5 pads and bit the bullet and bought these. Typically you expect that although the headphones are made in Germany, that the ear pads would be made in China (like my Sony MDR V6 pads, and the HM5 pads) but no; the BD pads are made in Germany - and it shows. I kept switching the pads from the original ones, to the HM5, and these new BD's and the sound-stage changed each time. The material was velour, but bass tends to be 'meatier' with the OEM pads compared to the HM5s (which tend to hold the cans about 1/4-1/2" further away from the drivers) A new set of pads just makes the whole thing feel cleaner (physically and musically) Keep in mind two things: - Do mind the instructions where it says to slightly warm the lip/edge of the pads before install as it will help with the install quite a bit. - When brand new they tend to be a bit stiff; they will break in within a few days. Lesson learned: If you're willing to spend $150-250 for a set of great earphones, don't cheap out. That's like drinking a bottle of $1000 champagne from a solo cup. Don't be afraid to try different pad styles (IE leather, gel) to find your niche - but for the purist experience the manufacture intended; stick with the real deal.
