Star Trek: Voyager: Spirit Walk #1: Old Wounds

Being an avid Star Trek fan (I grew up watching Voyager and afterwards watched and loved the rest of the franchise) I was skeptical of reading these novels. Simply because I knew the novels would introduce new characters and separate the crew I came to love. During the opening chapters, I was trying to decide if I loved Voyager because of the ship (which had some new characters) or if I loved it because of the crew we watched for seven years. And by the end, I realized it was both.This is a wonderfully written novel that continues the story of both Voyager and her crew. The stories and adventures intertwine wonderfully. I'm glad I picked this up and look forward to continuing the adventure!

When this book first came out I think I read most (though not all) of it, thought it was a pretty good read. Lately have had nostalgia @ Voyager post Endgame so decided to re-read the four Christie Golden Voy. books to refresh my memory, and this one is #3 on the list. Read it all in one night, still thought it was an enjoyable book; nice to see Chakotay getting command of Voyager and start his new career in Starfleet w/ some of the old Voyager crew and also some original (not in the TV show) characters. Also found the Paris/Torres activities interesting enough, and Admiral Janeway was around too, lol.Chakotay's sister was also fun to "meet" altho I think the pic of her on the cover is a little too young looking, but just MO. The one part I found a little strange was the ending; seemed kind of abrupt (of course it was a cliff hanger but the ending scenario seemed not to have enough set-up, and also maybe slightly illogical). But overall was an entertaining book, too bad the next one for me was less so, which somewhat deflates my pleasure in the fun of this novel, since the story didn't continue as positively (but that's Trek books for you, I suppose). Anyway, good book for Voyager fans pretty much, I would say.

This is a well-written, interesting book. Unfortunately, it won't stand on its own. If you like stories that continue from book to book, you can take this as a five-star review; just be sure to read both "Homecoming" and "The Farther Shore" before you read this one; it is the third book in the storyline, and makes little sense if you haven't read the preceding books. Given that the back cover actually says that it is the "continuation" of those two books, I won't dock the book an additional star, although I didn't notice that fact before reading it (I never read the back cover blurbs because they sometimes have spoilers and other times are terribly misleading) and so didn't notice that I should have read "The Farther Shore" first. That was my own fault, although it WOULD be nice if one could trust a book that says it is "book one" of a series to actually start at the beginning of a plotline, rather than in midplot. So my only real quibble with this book is my usual complaint about books with neither a beginning or an end; being "book one", it of course ends on a cliffhanger.

Since I am not the humanist that Roddenberry was, I have been glad to see Trek beginning to reflect upon areas of religion and spirituality in both Voyager and Deep Space 9. In the Voyager series, spirituality was a less dominant theme than in Deep Space 9 -- and I think the prominence given it in this book may be what troubles readers who find the book unsatisfying.When I was a high school librarian, I first encountered Christie Golden as an author of books for adolescents dealing with the unseen worlds (so to speak). Imagining and portraying those ideas is her forte as a writer, and she does those things very well in Old Wounds. I like also that she follows Voyager characters who are not on the ship. While it might have been nice to see a little more overt action in this novel, it has the appearance of "setting up" foundation for stories to follow. I assume there will be more than the already-available Book 2.Judging by this book, Golden's weak point may be multiculturalism. A majority of Americans seem unaware that "Native American" encompasses several hundred distinct cultures as different from each other as Spanish, German, English and Swedish are from each other. There is no more reason to suppose that all varieties of Native Americans would converge on Dorvan V than that there would be a "panEuropean" planet. I do not remember any indication from the TV series that Chakotay was from Dorvan V -- nor from the The TNG episode "Journey's End" that Dorvan V was inclusive of many tribes -- in TNG Dorvan V was pretty convincingly portrayed as an extension of Pueblo culture -- which is quite different from the sort of undefined Native American culture formatted for Chakotay. (I have often visualized his family as originally coming from one of the forest tribes he encountered in his trip with his father.) I think the cultural aspects of the series would have been better served if Sekaya, from Dorvan V, had been a sort of kindred spirit of Chakotay but not a blood relative with the attempt to tie Chakotay to Dorvan V. The true richness of Native American culture as it might develop into the future would have been better portrayed with her as not his sister but a fellow-traveler in vision questing.I do look forward to reading more of this (hopefully) series.

Talk talk talk. It's what made Voyager shows bad when they were bad. Unless you loved those chakotay episodes and very little happenings then you'll like this book. Spirit walks more talk more talk more talk. .Voyager launches to ferry survivors back to Loran 2. They arrive and are met by the killer Surgeon thought dead after his capture during the battle of Bata zed. . That's all that really happens. And Mirai a Voyager is mentioned in a Klingon Prophecy. .

So, it's the first official mission of Voyager after 6 months back in the Alpha Quadrant...The plot of this one didn't feel like it was moving as fast as Homecoming to me, but once I got to the halfway point, it felt like it picked up a bit.As a couple of other people have noted, Kim now at the tactical station is a bit hard to swallow, but I'm prepared to give it a chance. Also, it's probably not an important thing to fit in the book but Voyager has been in the Delta Quadrant for seven years, and when Chakotay takes command it's apparently reset to factory settings - no refit, no upgrades, in fact, downgraded if anything. I like my Trek Tech, so I was hoping Golden would throw me a bone here!I'm still not sure what to make of the fact that there are only apparently three characters from the show still on the ship... It would be unfeasible for the crew to still be together, but to have spread as far apart as they have still strikes me as a bit odd.There are few plots kicked off in this story (and a couple carried over from Homecoming/Farther Shore), which don't seem to interact with one another. I don't mind this so much as some are more interesting than others, and there are usually two or three different threads dealt with in a chapter.That's what I'm not sure to make of it - it's good to keep all the main cast in the book and doing their various tasks, but it can also detract from the main plot of the book.The Big Reveal at the end of the book left me a little cold, as I'd kinda pieced together what was going to happen before I got to the last page. Still, it was a short pleasant read that kept boredom at bay for an evening or two. I'm quietly hopeful part two will be better.

Damals führte ihn die Bedrohung seiner eigenen Heimat zum Maquis.Die Voyager bekommt eine teilweise neue Mannschaft, nachdem einige alte Crewmitglieder weggingen und sich das Personalrad drehte. In der Riege der Führungsoffiziere sind von den 'Ehemaligen' nur noch Chakotay und Kim als neuer Sicherheitschef an Bord. Entsprechend gibt es etliche neue Figuren, von denen so mancher mit der Erfahrung des Dominion-Kriegs im Rücken eine ganz andere Sternenflotte repräsentiert als jene sieben Jahre im Delta-Quadranten Verschollenen.Als spirituelle Beraterin für die Kolonisten wird Chakotays Schwester an Bord genommen. Sekaya vertrait ihm bald schon ein lang gehütetes Geheimnis an, wie ihr Vater Kolopak wirklich gestorben ist. Admiral Janeway und Tuvok begeben sich indes auf eine diplomatische Mission, um den drohenden Austritt einiger Planeten aus der Föderation abzuwenden. Falls sie es doch tun, wäre das Herz der Planetenallianz betroffen. Indes erforschen B'Elanna und Tom auf Boreth die klingonischen Prophezeiungen um die Kuvah'magh, die möglicherweise auf ihre Tochter anspielen.Auf ganz vielfältige Weise also nimmt der 'Spirit Walk' seinen Lauf...KritikWurde auch langsam Zeit, wird manch böse Zunge sagen. Die Voyager startet - nach dem Homecoming-Zweiteiler, der mehr ein Nachwehen-Abenteuer von Endgame war - zu neuen Ufern. Weil Janeway zwangsbefördert wurde, ist Chakotay die logische Nachfolge. Er begibt sich auf eine Mission, die mit seiner eigenen Vergangenheit durchaus in Korrespondenz steht. Seine Schwester ist dabei und schickt sich an, eine Charakterstudie in Gang zu setzen.Das alles macht keinen schlechten Eindruck, nachdem in den beiden vorigen Romanen das meiste Potential für die Protagonisten im Action- und Intrigengewimmel unterging. Und doch: Sieht man über Chakotay hinweg, wird es plötzlich dünn. Vor allem aber sehr fragmentiert. Anders als noch in Homecoming und The Farther Shore stehen plötzlich nur noch ganz bestimmte Serienhelden im Vordergrund, die überdies in Grüppchen agieren. Chakotay hier, Janeway und Tuvok dort, B'Elanna und Tom auf Boreth. Seven und der Doktor gehen so gut wie gänzlich unter.Obwohl sich Autorin Golden alle Mühe gibt, in bestimmten Szenen noch auf ein Zusammengehörigkeitsgefühl der alten Bande hinzuweisen, merkt der Leser doch recht schnell, dass die Voyager kaum noch etwas gemein hat mit der quirligen Wärme alter Tage. Sie ist zu einem regelrechten Teflonschiff geworden. Die Zersplitterung der Schicksale schreitet in Old Wounds unverkennbar voran. Während der Fokus auf Chakotay und einer so gut wie komplett neuen (und daher nicht so interessanten) Mannschaft liegt, haben Janeway oder B'Elanna nicht viel mit der eigentlichen Handlung des Romans zu tun - was ein erhebliches Defizit der Story ist.Uns werden zwar der neue Schiffsarzt Doktor Kaz und Counselor Astall näher gebracht - sonderlich erwärmen kann man sich indes nicht für sie. Viel zu sehr fragt man sich, warum man nun einen Haufen Neulinge aufgetischt bekommt, wo man doch VOY für die Serienhelden und das Familiengefühl so schätzte. Der verheißungsvolle 'Spirit Walk' betrifft offenbar die Falschen. Da sind die Spannungen in der Crew zwischen neuen und alten Mitgliedern schon interessanter, wenn sie darüber streiten, ob der Dominion-Krieg wohl ein schlimmeres Erlebnis war als die Heimreise der Voyager.Dieser Konflikt wird glaubhaft geschildert und erinnert subtil an die Auseinandersetzungen, die es zu Anfang der Serie zwischen Sternenflotten- und Maquiscrewmen gab. Störend fällt die krass ablehnende Haltung auf, mit denen die Sternenflotte im Allgemeinen den ehemaligen Maquisaden begegnet. Es wirkt einfach übertrieben, denn nach einem großen Krieg sollten solch vergängliche Gräben von früher eigentlich keine Rolle mehr spielen.Unter Kontinuitätsaspekten ist Old Wounds nahezu anspruchslos. Es lässt sich konsumieren, ohne die Vorkenntnisse aus den beiden Pilotromanen des VOY-Relaunch parat zu haben. Während der DS9-Relaunch auf dichte Zusammenhänge zwischen seinen Novellen setzt, bleibt VOY seinem etwas loserem Stil treu. Man sollte sich hingegen noch einmal die Story der Episode Tattoo aus der zweiten Staffel vergegenwärtigen, um nicht über ungewöhnliche Begriffe zu stolpern.Im Gegensatz zur Vorgängergeschichte tue ich mich schwer, ein klares Urteil über Olds Wounds zu fällen. Mit Sicherheit gibt sich Golden jetzt mit einigen Charakteren mehr Mühe. Und damit meine ich, dass sie nicht nur Gehabtes brühwarm und vorhersehbar aufkocht, sondern wirklich etwas Neues zu manchen Figuren - insbesondere der Chakotays - hinzuzufügen hat. Gingen Homecoming und The Farther Shore noch zu schnell auf Hundertachtzig, drückt bei diesem Roman die extreme Ruhe.Plots wie der um Libby Webber genießen beileibe nicht mehr die exponierte Stellung des letzten Buches, was nicht per se schlecht ist, aber einen auffälligen Bruch in der Atmosphäre des doch noch so jungen VOY-Relaunch darstellt. Fast meint man, dass die Handlung diesmal keine so große Rolle spielen soll. Erst am Ende, wo herauskommt, dass Chakotays neuer XO ein Formwandler ist, taucht Old Wounds wieder auf. Ohne jeden Zweifel bleibt für mich aber das größte Manko, dass die Gemeinschaft nun zerrissen ist. Scheinbar nachhaltig.FazitWenn die Storyführung so bleibt, dann wird das unweigerlich auch bedeuten, an der Berechtigung des VOY-Relaunch zu wackeln, weil die Crew als Ganzes nicht mehr vorkommt. Erteilt man Olds Wounds dahingehend aber eine Schonfrist, kann man der Geschichte auch nette Seiten abgewinnen. Unterm Strich gibt es Licht und Schatten, übrig bleibt guter Durchschnitt.

Auch in ihrem zweiten Mehrteiler zur Voyager-Fortsetzung versteht es Christie Golden sich einerseits tiefgreifend mit dem Inneren der Protagonisten zu beschäftigen und dies andererseits nie langweilig werden zu lassen. Man hat nie das Gefühl, man lese seitenweise Abhandlungen, weil dafür die Schauplätze oft genug wechseln.Bevor ich das Buch las, hat mich der Titel "Spirit Walk" etwas abgeschreckt, weil ich die mystischen Voyager-Folgen nie so ganz mochte und achte, dass es in Buchform richtig langweilig wird. Aber im Gegenteil: Auch die Handlungsteile, die in der "spirit world" spielen, sind spannend zu lesen und sind wichtig für die Haupthandlung.Auch dem Umstand, dass die Voyager-Crew nicht mehr in der alten Zusammensetzung auftritt, stand ich anfangs skeptisch gegenüber. Doch man merkt schnell, dass Christie Golden hier ein gutes Konzept hat und weiß die Charaktere schnell zu schätzen. Einzig die Personalie Tom Paris finde ich etwas unbeholfen in das Buch etwas integriert. Er wirkt irgendwie immer fehl am Platz und es fällt schwer, sich als Leser mit ihm zu identifizieren.Wie bereits beim ersten Zweiteiler konzentriert sich dieser erste Teil primär auf die Charaktere und ihr "Inneres", während der zweite Band die Handlung weiter voran bringt und actionlastiger ist.Fazit: Auch wenn im ersten Teil nicht so viel passiert wie im zweiten, ist er doch sehr lesenswert und wird an keiner Stelle langweilig. Tendenziell ist er sogar noch besser als der erste Teil von "Homecoming". Und nach der Lektüre des zweiten Teils will man den ersten auch auf keinen Fall gemisst haben!
