Complete Song Cycles: Die Schöne Müllerin, Die Winterreise, Schwanengesang (Dover Song Collections) (English and German Edition)

This volume includes the three major Schubert song cycles. It's not as usable or legible as the old Peters edition, but it is much more available and cheaper. The music of course is pure heaven, from the world-famous "Serenade" to the grim and lovely ``Winterreise'' cycle to the "Swan songs" that end with perhaps Schubert's loveliest song of all, the "Taubenpost;" that was also the last song he wrote. You can hum them, sing them, strum them on your guitar or piano and you'll be a better human being. For low voice, with adequate English translations in the back of the book.

These works are very important to me. This replaces an older, somewhat inadequate edition on which I relied for years. I now cherish this new look at some old favorites.

Translations in English are in the back, so it is very awkward to follow along if you don't read German. Otherwise, this a very good value.

Molti si chiedono a cosa possa servire il cartaceo di pezzi non più da un secolo sotto copyright e per questo scaricabili gratis legalmente dalle ormai note biblioteche musicali online. In tal senso questa recensione può essere valida per qualsiasi spartito o libro, ma cercherò di concentrarmi sui cicli schubertiani in oggetto. Dover è una casa editrice nota per ristampare edizioni preesistenti senza pretese estreme di filologia, e per questo ha il merito di abbattere i costi rispetto alle varie famigerate Urtext-ausgaben o edizioni critiche. Possiamo così avere per relativamente pochi euro un libro fruibilissimo per accostarsi allo studio della liederistica o per semplice consultazione. Quanto allo studio, la qualità della rilegatura e della carta fanno sì che il libro stia bene sul leggio di un pianoforte senza tendere a chiudersi o senza lasciar trasparire le note stampate sul retro delle pagine, cosa per un musicista molto fastidiosa quando si ha a che fare con stampe fatte in casa. Tutti i lieder sono in tonalità originale, alcuni sono trasposti o presentano versioni differenti. In conclusione, consiglio l'acquisto di questa raccolta dei tre grandi cicli di romanze di Schubert all'amatore, al melomane, allo studente o perfino al professionista che non abbia bisogno di addentrarsi in questioni filologiche specifiche. Se si ha coscienza della filosofia e degli obiettivi della casa editrice l'acquisto non potrà che dare molte soddisfazioni rispetto a una stampa fai-da-te.

I needed a set of Winterreise songs, but this book has all three of Schubert's song cycles at an affordable price. 58 songs in all. This is a full-size score (310mm x 240mm) and very readable compared with A4 or smaller copies.

If you're going to get the Song Cycles, this edition includes a good many details. Also, the "Laid Flat Sewn-Binding" is a great help. I was analyzing this book for my Music Theory class and not having to vigorously bend it so it would stay open was a life saver. The product was not damaged when I received it.
