Cat 3406 mechanical coolant temp
This is the one I was looking for ti for my application on a 3406 mechanical engine. Space was a concern as I didn’t need a bushing so the 1/2” size fit into my application much better. One terminal is smaller than the other so pay attention!

Good sensor but read the review to connect it properly
These sensors are supposed to be VDO 1009 as suggested by the laser engraved numbers on the head of the element. However, as far as I can tell the only VDO 1009 was the 323-803-001-009D which is no longer made. The 1009 should have a metric thread specifically M14 X 1.5. This particular sensor looks more like the 1019 which had a 1/2 NPT thread. Either one was a common ground sensor meaning that the ground connection is made via the engine block. There are two pins on the connector the wider one (G=gauge, 6.3 mm wide) is the output of the sensor. The narrow one (W=warning, 4.8 mm wide) is for the warning light which is normally open. The switch of the 1009 should close at 102°C while the one for the 1019 should do it at 92°C. As far as I can tell the switch of these sensors closes at around 87°C, turning off when the temperature drops back to about 82°C (about 180F). This is a bit outside the tolerance given by VDO (95+/-3) but they don’t specify at what resistance the switch is considered to be “open” so there is some room for error here. The sensor itself seems to be well within tolerances and the readings of resistance versus temperature follow closely the VDO tables. Overall the sensor performs well and it's beautifully machined. If you don’t require a super accurate switching point these are a good deal.

Looked Good . . . . But Wasn't
This dash gauge sender reads 75F high compared to Cummins ECM sender temp, verified with an OBD reader. Hi temp alarm sounded despite engine being a normal temp with gauge reading over 225F. . . . . and the socket was too large causing interference with valve cover. Go with the VDO branded sender.

This fit my machine. Looked the same, but dose not work. It shows hot as soon as cold engine is started.
