Q: Is 2.9 pounds (46.4 ounces) the actual weight? Estwing's site says nothing about weight. I will be backpacking so knowing the weight is important.

3#s is starting weight for felling, 3 1/2 # ect., 5#-7# is a fellers axe but hard to find. So 3# is considered a "camp axe" not much for splitting and not much for felling. keep it "crazy sharp" and it will be a good week end campers axe. Its the handle that is top drawer. also the metal is above average for holding a working edge. Just don't try to make a living with it. I own two easting axes, a 4 # short handled kindling maker that I lock up when ever the neighbors come tool hunting and an east wing miners rock pick that I killed a marauding wolverine with. Yes I like east wing products.

Q: Sportman's hatchet or camper's axe? I'd like it for cutting up kindling and wood for a campfire mostly.

Campers Axe has a groove cut out above the blade for pulling tent stakes out of the ground. Sportsman hatchet doesn't have the groove. Also, Estwing Axes & Hammers with the red multicolored handles are leather grips. The blue and the black colored grips are made of nylon.

its solid metal, forged tool steel running the entire length of the handle as well. its also not small. 18 inches if measured with a measuring tape, it weighs 3 lbs and splits wood very well.
