£90 Mathmos or £25 Lava Store
I was a bit reluctant to spend £90 on the Mathmos in case the novelty wore off after a short time, so I bought the cheaper entry level £25 Lava Store model. This just whetted my appetite for the Mathmos which I later bought. I noticed the following differences between these two similar looking lava lamps: The Mathmos is larger and heavier, weighing in at 3kg compared with the Lava Store at 1.3kg. It has a much bigger diameter bottle than the Lava Store. The volume of the liquid in the Mathmos looks about three times as much as the Lava Store. This large difference in size is not really noticeable when comparing Amazon website photos, but is very noticeable when compared side by side. The Mathmos colours are very bright and intense, and the clarity is better. The Mathmos movement of the blobs is more impressive because the blobs are much larger and they appear very vivid and fluorescent. So I have to conclude that the Mathmos is the best and worth the extra cost, whilst the Lava Store is reasonably good for the price. Edit: The bulb failed on day 2. It just blinked when switched on then went out. I replaced it with the supplied spare, and it worked. I fired off an email to Mathmos explaining that I loved the lamp, I had given it a five star review, but the bulb failed on day 2. I asked them if they could send me a replacement bulb. I didn’t think this was too much to ask for a £90 light received with a bulb which only worked once? Here is an extract from their poor reply: “To minimise inconvenience, we may include a complimentary spare bulb with every full product. The warranty coverage is not extended to the additional bulb. If both bulbs happen to fail, we’d be happy to assist with a replacement.” I think this is a very strange response to a report of a faulty product and I feel that their previously good reputation has taken a knock.

Amazing
Top notch lava lamp, no problems setting it up and well worth the price also it's massive, if you could imagine what a lava lamp should do, not just a few blobs floating up and down but full on tower of lava splitting in the middle then dripping down and flowing up at the same time, needless to say I am very happy with mine.

Look great and perform marvellously
These are great lamps - the originals. Don't be tempted to buy the cheap alternatives. These look great and perform well. They add a certain distinction to any room.

Quality issues
Expected better for such a premium price the liquid in the bottle has gone very cloudy despite not moving during usage. The wax also seems too bubbly, even after four or five uses and allowing the solution to cool fully. The lamp itself is of excellent build quality, but incredibly disappointing with the bottle. I'm assuming this one was simply an unlucky defective bottle I received, when attempting to get a replacement there is no option to simply return the bottle alone for a quick solution to the issue - so now I'm having to wait for Mathmos to process the return, refund it and then having to repurchase it again, wasting more time.

Bulbs are a problem
Lovely lamp however I've now used 8 bulbs in a couple of months. Only ever used brand Mathmos ones but they now only last one night. Have tried a lower wattage than it is supposed to require, or came with, which has lasted a week so far. 🤔

Original and still the best.
Bright, welcoming with a heavy hit of nostalgia, a Mathmos lava lamp is head and shoulders about the rest. You get what you pay for and the price is worth the peace of mind that you have a quality product. Save up and buy the best, life is too short to not invest a little more.
