Amazing insight into what it was like living during the occupation and working for the Resistance. Review: Fascinating first-hand account of the Cretan Resistance - This book, written by George Psychoundakis and translated by Patrick Leigh Fermor is a gem. Psychoundakis was just 21 when the Nazis invaded Crete. He kept journals about his time as a guerilla fighter. During that time, the group of fighters, which included Cretans and Brits, became very close. Leigh Fermor became a friend, and obtained access to these journals and translated them, Leigh Fermor includes some of his own editorial notes as well as pictures of the men. We follow this mission, through caves and gorges and mountains in Crete, as these men fought against the Nazis. It’s a fascinating first-hand account of the battle. I couldn't put it down. If you love history, love Crete, add The Cretan Runner to your list.

Crete Resistance
How the resistance worked with an inside view, four years of German occupation and inhumanity witnessed and fought against by Cretan resistance fighters and their unbelievable stamina working for British Army.

Gripping story, but flat presentation
How could such a compelling story come out as almost boring? Never got a sense of the authors personality. Matter of fact presentation. Even the role of author, distance he ran, the meat of the story largely absent.

Great piece of history showing the bravery and resourcefulness of ...
Well done! Wish there could have been a few maps of Crete showing the various cities quoted. Great piece of history showing the bravery and resourcefulness of the Cretans and Allied forces to disrupt German operations.

Nice collection of recollections and stories from a lowly but important member of the resistance whose activities put both his own life and that of his family and villagers at risk. Written in a simple style that conjures up a good picture of Crete and the ever-prevailing danger that accompanied every member of the resistance and the British serviceman operational on the island.

Delivered to Norway and took some additional time compared to forecast. The book gives a special insight om a Cretan perspective from a young man caught up in a war that began far away. It has a largely perfunctory style and from this distance seems surprisingly matter of fact.
