Works great and I believe this is the best buy in a metal detector right now!
I have thought about buying a metal detector for years. I have been interested in this pursuit but after finding this one at this price point I finally decided to jump in. My initial thought was to use it for finding fired brass in my yard. I live out in the country and we regularly shoot all kinds of semi-autos and there is brass all over the yard lying there which is perfect for destroying lawnmower blades. I usually try to pick them up but they are impossible to find at times. The first day shooting after receiving the Bounty Hunter I only found about half of the empty shell casings by just visually looking around. I then brought out the Bounty Hunter and in just a few minutes I found all but one! It very easy to use but like others reviewers have said...read the instructions before you start. Spend some time reading and studying the manual and you will have good results to start. I am convinced that many of the negative reviewers omitted this step. Ground balancing when starting out is very important as well as understanding the display and the feedback it provides audibly and visually. Its not overly complex and easy to understand but you have to read the manual unless you already have experience with metal detectors. I am looking forward to running this thing around over my property and seeing what else I can find. I have already found a piece of chain and an old axe head so i am sure there is a lot more interesting stuff thats not on the surface as well. I read a lot of reviews and did a lot of research before buying this thing. I am convinced there is not a better unit to be had for less than three times what this one costs. Its relatively light and the display has a lot of feedback to offer for your searching. This is a great buy.

Works as advertised
I gave the Time ranger 3 stars because it works as advertised. So far good for finding metal close to the surface of the ground, I imagine looking for coins and other items in parks or the beach is where it would be really useful. Have scanned some areas of my property and was surprised by the discovered metal objects. So far I've found a few coins, buried metal lawn chairs, and soda cans that were an inch or two below the surface.. I am confident that with experience and time, that other, more interesting objects will be discovered.

Pretty Awesome. But don't Lose the Directions.
I will admit that this thing has had relatively little use, but I have enjoyed it! It first appealed to me because it was on sale for $170 or so, normally (at the time I bought it) around $400 or $500. I thought it was a steal, I still think it is a pretty good deal.It is really cool to use it and find stuff--even if that "schtuff" is useless and of little-to-no value whatsoever. It is a fun little hobby to get into and it's something my 11 year old and I enjoy doing together.I feel this is a good unit for someone wanting to get into the hobby. There are certainly cheaper ones out there and I know there are those that are much better, but the price was right for me. Some people complain that this is a little too advanced for a beginner. Yes and no. If you are buying this for an 11 year old and saying go have fun on your own, then yes. If you are an adult buying this for yourself and know how to read an operating manual, then no, it is just fine. Is this one a little complicated? I think it is. But that is why I generally keep the directions with it...or where I know where to find them.I do wish this whole unit was waterproof as some of the higher-end units. Sometimes I can't keep this thing from finding trash, but hey, that one piece of trash you don't decide to dig up could have been something cool. I can adjust the unit to avoid picking up the same type of trash, but it is not exactly inherent in how to do it all the time and it didn't really work when I tried it--oh well.I would advise that you take the batteries out and put them on a shelf if you will not be using this for more than a month or two. Two 9 volt batteries aren't cheap and I haven't found enough gold in the ground to just let batteries go to waste.

I can't believe how good this detector is
I have several highly regarded metal detectors that cost a lot of money when they were new such as a whites 6000 di pro, a VX3, and a DFX, a Garrett AT Pro and an AT Max and I have to say that I feel cheated now that I've used a bounty hunter time ranger. The time ranger is performing just as well and in some cases even a little better then the other ones mentioned. I'm amazed at it's stability, it's depth capabilities, and the accuracy of its Target ID system. There's nothing about it that I don't like to the point that I'm most likely going to sell the other detectors and buy a second or maybe even a third time ranger. I highly recommend this detector to everybody. You absolutely cannot go wrong with it for its price, in fact I don't think you couldn't go wrong with it for double its price.
