It is straight forward and has a great section in the beginning of the book explaining to the parent how best use this resource. My son is high functioning and doesn't have as many social issues as some so I thought this book might not apply to him. What I am finding is that he appreciates the whole book, it boosts his confidence in the skills he already possess and adds guidance to those areas where he struggles. I think this book would apply to a broad spectrum of children, not only those on the Autism Spectrum but also those with social anxiety or who are terribly shy. Knowledge is power, and the social aspect of our society is full of rules...having a resource to help kids understand those rules is invaluable. Review: great for discussion with my 7 year old high functioning autistic son - My HFA son was resistant to reading this as it wasn't about one of his current obsessions--so I read to him and slowly it gained his interest. Some stories are more relative to his social needs than others. I now find him reading it to himself. He gets a kick out of the "wrong" way and likes to act it out with me. There are some scenarios that are spot on for him. He looked shocked when I read one of them about being a poor loser-- (as that is one of his worst issues with neighbors and playing) We have only had the book for a couple of weeks-- so I can't report a big change in behavior BUT I do notice more of an understanding from him. If I see him getting worked up, I mention "remember ... is this the right or wrong way?" and he nods. It has opened up more of a discussion from him. I think it will be a great resource for helping elementary age kids with autism navigate the social scene.

Great resource for older/higher-functioning kiddos on the spectrum
The pictures and captions throughout this book are a very helpful visual aid to teach social skills and positive interaction. I'm the mom of a 7-year-old daughter with high-functioning autism, and this book has been quite helpful in helping my daughter understand concepts that can be difficult to teach. I don't recommend this book for younger kiddos, however. Even a year or so ago, our daughter would not have been ready for this. One other thing to consider, which the author does point out, is that for some children with autism, it can be counter-productive to point out how *not* to do something because it can unintentionally call attention to/reinforce behaviors that you *don't* want your child to emulate. Our daughter doesn't have a problem with this currently, but if your child does, then I would recommend that you review the book first, get some blank paper and tape over all of the "don't do this" examples, and then just share the positive examples with your child.

Timeless classic
An old favorite. I just bought it again for a friend. My son used to study this book about throw to communicate with others. He does not have autism, but he does have ADHD and sensory processing disorder.

Awesome for social skills!
I have been wanting to purchase this book for some time now and I am glad I did! My two oldest sons have ASD diagnosis and I especially worry about my oldest ever "getting" social skills even though he is brilliant. I think the photographs make it so much more real. Also, the words used here are words we were already using with his ABA therapists! I shared the book with his therapists and they were so excited, both are going to buy the book for themselves. It is a wonderful resource, one I think many parents should utilize, not just parents of kids on the spectrum.

Minimally to non neurodiverse affirming
I like the pictures and some of the examples, however some of the "standards" or teachings in the book feel dated or a little non-neurodiversity affirming, especially for some of my patients, and therefore I wish I was able to return this since I do not really use it.

Helpful Resource
I really like this book. I wasn’t sure at first but the more I look through it, the more I like it. I have one child with autism (11 years old) and another one with ADHD(10 years old). Both struggle with basic social skills. I think this book will be a big help to them. I actually think this is going to be a great resource for all my children, even the ones without a diagnoses. Only wish it was hardcover, as paperback books sometimes meet an unfortunate end here. I plan to cover it with contact paper though and I think that will help.

Good!
This was suggested by my daughter's physiologist. It's helped.

Very helpful book to explain and show via pictures ('right way' and 'wrong way') social appropriate behaviors to (young) children. It covers various topics: personal space, greeting, holding a conversation, interrupting, asking for toys/initiating play, sharing and dealing with teasing, among other things. I believe this book is very useful if you have a child that struggles to cope with social interactions. Apart from having numerous examples, the book gives insight on how to practice these skills, and how to create your own social picture stories, tailored to the needs of your child. Very pleased with this book!

Useful resource to teach social skills.

A little outdated in terms of the language used but still a good guide for doing your own social stories
