No, it is another ingredient in the potting mix that provides additional aeration and increases water drainage through the mix. It is more commonly referred to as perlite. It’s a type of expanded volcanic rock. I like mixes that include perlite as the mixes are less likely to become water soaked which, as you know, orchids like Phalaenopsis don’t like.
