Excellent game for the money
Allow me to open by saying that I have never seen Ghost in the Shell. I am aware of it though. This will strictly be about the stand alone game (pun intended). I bought this for my girlfriend as GitS is her favourite anime. I wanted to give the game a shot and buying it secondhand gave me the perfect cover to do so without her knowing. The controls take a little to get used to, but once you acclimate to them, they feel very fluid and responsive. I never felt any of my deaths were unfair or cheap, due to the 3rd person camera angle and controls. The graphics hold up surprisingly well for a game that is about five years old and on a outdated console. I am running it through component cables and using the in-game option for widescreen on my TV (Samsung 32" HD) and it looks great. The framerate was excellent, I never had any issues with slowdown or texture loading/tearing. Some of the edges can be a bit jagged, but that comes with the age of the game. There was absolutely no ghosting, which is something I've noted that some PS2 games are laden with on HD TVs, namely earlier games. The audio is very well done and stands up to even some of todays AAA titles. I play in 5.1 surround through the native optical audio port in the back and it sounds great. My only complaint is the music, it's horrible. From what I gather Yokko Kanno composed the music in the anime (also did Cowboy Bebop, my personal favourite anime) and it's clear she had nothing to do with the 4-5 repetitive and droning tracks in the game. Fortunately, you can turn the music down in-game and the voice acting is frequent enough and done well enough to make up for the lack of music. The gameplay works well for the game. It is a action/adventure game with a heavy focus on run-and-gun style of play. The arsenal you can work with is your typical SMG, shotgun, RPG, etc. and very basic. No frills, they throw lead. The enemies are challenging only on the hard mode I found. The AI can be downright broken at times. On more than one occasion I found myself walking almost in front of them and they still didn't shoot at me, or, I would shoot at them from a distance and they would continue walking their pattern undisturbed; even if a bullet or two hit them! But, it never really happened frequently enough for it to detract too much from the fun. Replay value is excellent as well. At the end of every level you are given a point value based on enemies dispatched, time spent in level and number of deaths. The higher your score, the more you unlock at the end of the game. There is a vast number of things to unlock post game including new outfits, guns not before available, infinite ammo and even being able to select any weapon in the game to take with you into a level. I won't spoil it all, but it is worth finding everything. In conclusion, I found this game to be very enjoyable coming into it blind and I am glad I bought it. It was worth every penny of the 20$ I spent on it.

Authentic, challenging, and nostalgic game. Something new in the franchise!
It's all in the game description: Major Kusanagi, Batou, and even the Tachikoma - you get to play as them all! Reminding me of an early-generation PS2 game in terms of ambition, scale, and graphics (before games opted for smaller worlds with different detailing), the gameplay exceeded my expectations. Original music score is rather simple, but especially the intro and some level tracks fit well with the pseudo-traditional feel the franchise has maintained. Many different level layouts and enemy types fuse with the story to give a wide range of highly entertaining gameplay: from "clear all enemy" levels to hacking/infiltration missions and advanced platforming and tachikoma racing, this game really has it all!For fans of GiTS, this game is an alternate way of enjoying the GiTS world with nostalgia around every corner, though with an abundance of new world-building. Highly recommended!

If your a fan of the SAC and the movies, you'll love this game
If your into anime and a Ghost in the Shell fan then get this game.- Really balance gameplay, controls feel solid and functional- Hack enemies and control them for a short period of time (even use them to kill other enemies)- Play as Major and Bato, every other level or so you alternate- The Story feels true to the sprit of the Stand Alone Complex series-Some jumping puzzles sour experience- You pretty much have to be a fan of the show it like this game, story wise at least

A must have for fans of the GiTS series!
Although this game can be quite a challenge at times, it is nevertheless a solid product for the ps2. All the characters are voiced by the same english actors from the tv series, and the graphics are pretty solid for the hardware it runs on. Gameplay is fun, and the story stays true to the Ghost in the Shell universe. All in all, a great product for a good price!

Decent game for a GitS fan
I enjoyed it. The game play by some, could be construed as monotonous, perhaps. As a fan of Ghost in the Shell, the game is decent. The graphics, style and story are well done, and the actual voice actors for the movies/tv series were brought in for the game. That is a bonus for me.
