Made A Noticeable Difference Immediately
I like this ligature so much I ordered one for my alto and one for my soprano. Fresh out of the box and onto my Claude Lakey 6*3 mouthpiece (Rico Plasticover 2.5 reed, Yamaha Custom Z tenor) it made a noticeable difference in my top to bottom tone control, my ability to play at a lower volume and has actually improved my high end range a bit - something I did not think a ligature could do. I feel it's the best sax related purchase I have made in quite a long time.

Perfect for my set-up
I play on Legere synthetic reeds, which don't stick to the mouthpiece table like cane reeds, so a good fitting ligature is very important to my set-up. I have a Morgan HR jazz mouthpiece that runs a bit narrower than some other HR pieces. I had tried two other Rovners with it, but each one lacked the ringing tone of the two screw metal ligature I had. The problem was that the generic metal ligature was just a bit loose. The Rovner Platinum offers the best of both. It has the ringing tone of a metal ligature with the secure fit of a Rovner ligature.

Has Rovner cut Platinum cost and quality?
I got my first Rovner Platinum ligature in a trade deal, and liked it so much that I bought my first Platinum P-2R for rubber tenor mouthpieces about six months ago. Then I bought my second Platinum P-2R (the one I am reviewing here) a few weeks ago. I liked several things about my first two Platinums: 1) how quick and easy they were to use, even in low light, 2) how securely the ligature held any reed in place, and 3) how flexibly they adapted to slight changes in barrel diameter. Then I ordered this one - my third Rovner Platinum and second P-2R. I noticed that the "girdle" (the part that goes around the barrel) is slightly out of round and that reeds tend to torque towards one side of the table. This really annoys me because the time I save using a single screw lig is frittered away tweaking the reed. I haven't tried to bend or fiddle with the girdle (yet), but for this kind of money I think a customer should not have to. I also noticed a cosmetic change - that the two bars to which the lig screw are attached are no longer brass but apparently nickel. The cosmetic change is hardly a deal breaker, but it occurs at the same time as the girdle is out of round and reeds are pushed to one side of the table. Is this a coincidence - the luck of the draw so to speak - or has Rovner cut quality and cost at the same time? I don't know. I gave the Platinum P-2R a generous four stars because I hate to slam a product based on one out of three experiences. But I personally will think twice before buying another Rovner Platinum. If I do buy one, it probably won't be online but somewhere where I can open the box and look at it. The Platinum is a pricey lig and there simply are other tried and true choices at this price point, like the Francois Louis Ultimate for example.

Hard rubber kills metal.
I play big band W boom box at Christmas- outside in cold. With Berg Larson on alto, I'm given out, intonation suffering, not able to focus on task after only an hour. This platinum; same horn, Reed, but with hard rubber in the mix, I play for seven, eight hours. They're changing bucket at Salvation Army several times while I'm there. The hr mouthpiece and Rovner makes possible things for me. This thing is alto on steroids. Tom Kipfer

Helped me with my high G
I play a Cannonball tenor sax. I am a new student on the sax. I bought this ligature because I was having problems making the upper staff G note. My instructor reversed the ligature so the adjusting screw is on top. See pic! This helped along with an adjustment of my embouchure. Great quality, fast shipping!

Rovner Platinum for Tenor Sax HR
I first started looking for a new ligature because I needed one that firmly holds the reed in place. My particular needs also require a metal ligature to avoid an airy tone. This ligature holds the reed in place far better than I ever expected. It is impossible to move the reed once the ligature is tightened, which is great. I am also able to achieve a clear tone without airiness. Mouthpiece response is also improved compared to stock ligatures. Lower notes seem to speak with more ease with the Platinum. Intonation is improved compared to the stock ligatures that flatten pitch. Part of the design of the Platinum is to be dark, therefore, there is not a great amount of flexibility or brilliance. However, there is a slight ring and weight added to the sound. Single screw operation is also more precise than double screw. I'd recommend this ligature for anyone looking for the previously stated improvements. The Platinum compliments my long shank Selmer Soloist F facing with Vandoren V16 #2 reeds

Decent, easy to use ligature for upgrading
Wanted to upgrade my plastic Syos ligature. This Rovner platinum ligature is used on my Syos original 3D printed mouthpiece for tenor sax. It fits perfectly. The Rovner does not sound different than the Ultimate Ligature Francois Louis Saxophone Ligature, but it fits much better and does not move around at all, unlike the Louis one that moved around easily. And the Rovner looks very nice on the mouthpiece.
