The Great Gilly Hopkins [DVD]

Have watched this movie at least 5 times since receiving it! Each time I find something different to draw my attention and really think about

Second time watching this film. Watched it years ago. And it holds up. If you are looking for Julia Stiles, she's just a small part. The others are the main focus. I work in child welfare. I think it's pretty accurate regarding the way it starts out. Not sure about the realism for the last third. Maybe. This film needs a part two to see how things play out.

Great movie, very sweet

This was actually a pretty good movie. I'm giving it 4 stars because it's a family movie, but it has some "language" which kind of defeats the purpose for a family movie. However, my kids aren't saints, and so we still watched it together and enjoyed it. A few of my kids are adopted, so it kind of hit home. The movie tries to tackle some issues of foster care and adoption, and does a pretty good job, but be aware that it does have a specific message. Read on, if you have adopted or foster kids. This is a review of the movie, not the book.SPOILERS: In this story, Gilly is a foster kid who has really been bounced around. She has a bad attitude, and has gotten kicked out of a lot of places in the past. The movie starts when she goes to live with a foster Mom who is quirky, but wonderful. As the story progresses, for the first time in her life, Gilly finally feels like she is part of a "family." Gilly makes some serious mistakes, but she really loves her newfound "family."But then Gilly's wealthy biological Grandmother discovers her existence, and gains custody of Gilly. This is really heart-wrenching, and part of you (as a viewer) wants the bio Grandma to be a jerk, so Gilly can go back to live with the sweet, loving foster mom. But that's not what happens. The bio Grandma is still a decent person, and although she's not as "warm and fuzzy" as the foster Mom, she still loves Gilly. Gilly's bio Grandma tries to re-introduce Gilly's bio Mom, and that is a complete disaster, and Gilly realizes that her bio Mom is very selfish, but that her Grandma is trying really hard.In the end, the "moral" of the story is that Gilly needed to stay with her bio Grandma: basically, biology trumps. But it muddies the waters quite a bit, as it then depicts Gilly and her bio Grandma forging an "open" relationship with the former foster family--an outcome that is unrealistic in many instances. So the story sort of comes across as a nice fantasy. In any case, adoptive/foster families should be aware that the movie has a slant toward reunification, and it fairly unflinchingly portrays a bio mom who is selfish and incapable of a relationship. Good movie, and it provides things to talk about. Just view with discretion in the event that any of those things are a delicate topic in a household with adopted or foster kids.

This isn't a movie we had ever heard about but we took a chance after watching the trailer. Totally worth the rental price. I don't know if it is necessarily a timeless classic, but worth watching from beginning to end at least once.

Movie the whole family will love.

So delightful. Kathy Bates is always good, and I loved her in this roll. Sophie Nelisse is Excellent!! Heartwarming story that faces too many young ones today, and very well done. Just the right blend of humor and heartache with a great ending. I’ll watch this one again and again in my collection.

This movie was so touching. I cried. I'm always fascinated by the little things that make a difference in people's lives. And this movie didn't disappoint.

Teenager Gilly Hopkins (Sophie Nélisse) ist nach außen vorlaut, frech und einfach nicht zu bändigen.Ihre leibliche Mutter hat sie noch nie gesehen und so wird Gilly von einer Pflegefamilie in die nächste weitergereicht.Als Gilly schließlich bei Maime Trotter (Kathy Bates) landet, tut sie wieder alles, um zu zeigen, daß sie niemanden braucht, doch Trotter und ihr Pflegesohn William Elliott (Zachary Hernandez) machen es dem Mädchen fast unmöglich, sich nicht langsam heimisch zu fühlen. Hat Gilly endlich ein dauerhaftes Zuhause gefunden?Ich bin durch den Trailer, der als Vorschau auf einer anderen DVD gezeigt wurde, auf ‚Gilly Hopkins‚ aufmerksam geworden und habe mir die DVD für einen faulen Sonntagnachmittag ausgeliehen, weil der Film nach guter Unterhaltung klang.Diese Erwartung konnte der Film auch durchaus erfüllen.Gilly ist eine ziemlich harte Nuss für ihre Umwelt, weil sie immer nur verlassen wurde und nun eben permanent zeigen muss, daß sie niemanden braucht und gut allein mit allem zurechtkommt.Gerade Erwachsene haben sie immer nur enttäuscht und gerade diese Trotzhaltung von Gilly spielt Sophie Nélisse sehr überzeugend. Ich finde das Mädchen aber allgemein sehr sympathisch und wünsche ihr, daß sie noch einige Filme drehen darf, wenn es ihr Spaß macht.Kathy Bates kenne ich eher in sehr spröden Rollen, aber ihre Trotter ist sowohl sympathisch, als auch mütterlich, wenn auch nicht übertrieben süß. Sie will einfach nur das Beste für ‚ihre‘ Kinder, auch wenn es ihr selbst dabei das Herz bricht.Großartig fand ich auch Bill Cobbs in der Rolle des blinden Nachbarn Mr. Randolph, von dem Gilly auch sehr viel Sympathie und Aufmerksamkeit bekommt und Octavia Spencer als Lehrerin Miss Harris, von der Gilly eine Menge lernt.Glenn Close, Julia Stiles und Billy Magnussen spielen nur kleine Rollen, sind dafür aber gut ausgesucht.Manch eine Entwicklung von Gilly ging mir ein wenig zu schnell und übergangslos vonstatten, von daher würde ich den Film auch eher als Familienfilm mit einer Portion Humor einordnen, als als wirkliches Drama, aber insgesamt habe ich mich gut unterhalten gefühlt und kann ihn als nettes Popcornkino für zwischendurch durchaus empfehlen.

... auch wenn das verdammt weh tut. Pflegemutter Maime Trotter(Kathy Bates) hat genug erlebt, um zu wissen wovon sie redet. Bei ihrem neuen Pflegekind Gilly Hopkins(Sophie Nelisse) kommt das jedoch nicht an. Gilly wechselt die Pflegefamilien wie die Wäsche und will nur eins: Zu ihrer Mutter, die irgendwo in San Francisco stecken soll. So versucht Gilly Maime Trotter, ihren Pflegebruder WE(Zachary Hernandez), den Nachbarn Mister Randolph(Bill Cobbs) und ihre Lehrerin Miss Harris(Octavia Spencer) in den Wahnsinn zu treiben. Doch Gilly beißt auf Granit. Diese Menschen sind von ihr nicht zu knacken, ja scheinen sie sogar zu lieben. Also fährt Gilly schwereres Geschütz, in Form eines Briefes auf. Der bringt nicht nur Gillys Welt fast zum Absturz...Nach Katherine Patersons Kinderbuch aus dem Jahr 1978 hat Stephen Herek einen richtig schönen Film an den Start gebracht. Der überzeugt durch ein gutes Drehbuch, einen Plot, der knapp am Kitsch vorbei schrammt, die überragenden Mimen Kathy Bates, Octavia Spencer und Bill Cobbs, sowie eine ganze Handvoll weiterer guter Schauspieler. Alles in allem ein sehr gelungenes Gesamtpaket, das die ganze Familie von Klein bis Groß vor den Bildschirm bannt. Zum Schluss dürfen dann die Taschentücher rausgeholt werden. Was will man mehr? Ich war jedenfalls restlos zufrieden.

Ja, es ist ein schöner Film, aber so unendlich traurig. Ich hatte wegen des Staraufgebots angenommen, er wäre tiefgründiger, Gilly's Verwandlung vom bad zum good girl vollzieht sich ohne jeden Grund innerhalb weniger Sequenzen und den Rest heulen und heulen und heulen alle nur. Als Zuschauer kam ich mir regelrecht manipuliert vor, weil auch ich so herzzerreissend mitheulen musste. Positiv ist da irgendwie nichts und lehrreich ist es auch nicht, man identifiziert sich nicht, man bemitleidet alle vorgestellen Personen nur ganz schrecklich, also nicht nur die vernachlässigte Gilly, sondern auch die herzensgute Tottie, den verängstigten neuen Bruder den belesenen erblindeten Nachbarn und natürlich Gillies liebenswürdige und traurig-traurige Grossmutter, wobei völlig unklar bleibt, warum sie so eine komplett verkorkste Tochter hat (Juia Stiles steht übrigens als 3. Star und Aushängeschild auf dem Cover, kommt aber nur in 2 Mini-Mini-Szenen vor).Ich wollte den Film jedenfalls als einen mehrerer Programmpunkte anlässlich einer Übernachtungsparty zum 13. Geburtstags unserer Tochter zeigen, weil es für diese Altersklasse auch kaum gute Filme gibt, aber danach wäre die Stimmung einfach zu bedrückt gewesen, das empfand auch unsere Tochter. Dieser Film ist eher ein Rausschmeisser, weil die Zuschauer danach emotional komplett fertig sind und nur noch nach Hause wollen :-)). Ich habe nichts gegen emotionale Kinder- bzw. Jugendfilme, ganz im Gegenteil, aber ich bezweifle, dass wir den Film jemals wieder schauen, denn das einzige das übrig bliebt ist : Weißte noch, der Fim, bei dem wir damals so geheult haben ? Schrecklich. Wer statt dessen einen Film-Tipp für uns hat, wird herzlich um einen Kommentar gebeten.
