Fantastic portable recorder, but buy an external battery!

After much research (mainly looking at the Zoom H4N and Tascam DR-60D) I settled on this. Although its menus are slightly more fiddly than the DR-60D (that's personal preference, if you don't mind menus rather than individual buttons, this won't be an issue!) the on-board microphones were an added bonus. It's compact, easily fits in my bag, and can be attached to a camera tripod easily, and the mount on the top allows for a DSLR or similar to be then attached above the field recorder. The dual record feature has come in very useful as a backup in case of sudden loud noises on the main channel.Pros:Being able to record at a lower level on another channel as a backup is a life-saver.On-board mics are good.Low pre-amp noise.Tripod mount capabilities are extremely handy. On screen display is clear.Cons:Eats through batteries like nothing - MUST use it with an external battery pack if you want to be able to use it for more than a couple of hours!Menus can be slightly fiddly to navigate if you haven't been using it long (but you get used to where things are)

Very happy with this, i love the extra 2 channels making an automatic backup recording at a lower input level for peace of mind.

Fantastic quality audio recorder for stand-alone use or for use with a DSLR or Video camera. It records to a full sized SD card, not supplied. The recorder can record 4 independent channels at once either via the 2 built in microphones and 2 external mics or line input devices, or is can record 2 tracks at the level you set and a further 2 identical tracks recorded at -12db lower level, this gives a fantastic back up file just in case your main file is recorded at too high a level, this can often happen when someone shouts after speaking quietly, or during a musical performance perhaps the volume is increased and you fail to notice, this can really get you out of trouble when editing and producing a video.

Pretty damned good for the money.

Great kit for the money. pretty quiet pres and lots of useful features. A bit bulky for camera mounting but great for external sound synced in post.

Sensible sound recorder

This unit although it's been available for some time still delivers great sound & performance.I love having control of the four XLR inputs on the from of the unit, something that made me go for this unit & not it's bigger brother the 680.There is though the situation with battery life & the need for you to have an external re-chargable unit with USB sockets. I've used the Tascam 70D on two shoots now & with the external battery pack I've had no problems with power.Although the unit does send phantom power out to mics needed it & shows which output has phantom power it would be nice if you were able to switch this feature on & off without delving into the menu.As far as sound quality goes it really is very good & flexible with a host of different mic set ups. I've used shotgun, a range of radio mics & MS mics. All have delivered excellent results.Great value for the money.

Small in size, big on performance

I studied several reviews of this excellent audio recorder before parting with the purchase price. I used the recorder to capture the sound whilst filming a Remembrance Day Parade and Service. There was a stiff breeze blowing and the on-board microphones coped very well. I am planning to source some foam rubber covers for the microphones however. I purchased a battery pack to power the recorder in view of the comments in the reviews ref. the short battery life of the built-in AA batteries. Being able to connect microphones of various types and control them individually is a real plus. Surprising large performance from such a small device. I am well pleased with my purchase.

Complicated

TASCAM is overlay complicated. Most of TASCAM products are far from 'plug n play.' You spend more time trying to figure out the menu/settings which is a waste of time. I'd go for the RODE GO II if you looking for a twin-channel mic set for DSLR's.

Good, clean sound

This is smaller than expected, which is good. It's fairly lightweight and uses multi input XLR ports. You can of course connect it to your camera with the line out port. Also has a slate function. The screen is bright and clear and the sound is actually very clean for the price, approximately -127dbu! With low noise mics this is a winner all day long.I found the menu system easy to navigate. Sadly I had a fault with mine but I'd definitely consider it in the future if I needed something with this many inputs and form factor.
