Do you have to vacuum and clean carpets separately, or does it do both at the same time?

Yes you have to vacuum first especially if you have pets as the hair can go through the machine, I vacuumed first really well and there was still some clumps of fur in the dirty water container. It is a bit noisy, but I was impressed by the appearance of my pale gold carpet after the clean and rinse. It reduced the odour of cat substantially too, I have an elderly slightly incontinent cat. While we protect and spot clean as much as possible the machine did a good job.

Can you use this on a regular basis as just a normal hoover?

what is the noise ( dBA) when using the cleaner

I have no clue as the graduated calibration scale on my hearing is unreliable. What I am happy to report is that it generates no more noise than any of our last 3 vacuum cleaners.
