The Carbon Monoxide unit had an eight year life but lasted an extra 3 months before we had to replace. We were very pleased with the old one. This new one has an increased Carbon Monoxide unit life to 10 years. Also has a "hush" button that you can push to silence the alarm if it goes off when cooking, etc. We also like that it talks as well as beeps, so you don't have to remember what a particular beep pattern means. It will say "Fire, Fire", "Carbon Monoxide"; even "Low Battery" so you know when to replace batteries.
