Can I use this product for bird seed

Yes but cover the lower opening with cello tape while filling to keep seeds in . I did not like this container as even the meal worm spilled out a lot. Also one of the green plastic clips for the opening kept popping off.

Is this feeder specifically for mealworms or can I fill it with sunflower hearts?

I wish I knew?!?! I was unaware until now that it was to be used for mealworms. My son filled all my bird feeders and happened to use that one for mealworm. Very popular with small birds.
