Zen Speaks: Shouts of Nothingness

I fell in love with this book when I was 13. The Zen teachings have helped me to understand myself and the world around me. I'm so glad to have encountered this book at such a young age. Buy this for any introspective creative children in your life.

Very fun. I love these comics. I've read about 40 books on zen buddhism in my life. This is a fun medium and these comics pack a lot of zen punch. I feel there's a lot of information in this terse and beautiful format! Love it!

I believe this is one of the only 5 star reviews I've ever given.Why a Buddhist comic book? Because you can simply open it, point to a page and work on THAT THING. If you have children and they are curious about Buddhism, voila! You have a damn comic book! If there are folk about who think it's just about sitting in a pond pondering bellybuttons, just hand them the book. Memorize the lessons and appear wise to those around you (well, or just memorize them for your own well-being).Illustrated learning is a foundation of understanding.That is all.

Beautiful, meaningful book. It is basically a bunch of "koans" turned into brief comics. Given the inherent irreverence of Zen Buddhism and its emphasis on reducing the amount of words used to cut through the truth, I think comics are a perfect vehicle for these koans. I often re-read a random clips I saved right after a meditation session at home and find it great to use for pondering.

I wanted to give my daughter my copy of this Zen cartoon book, but wanted to retain my copy as well. Found good condition used copy on Amazon. Now we are both happy.

I bought this book about 12 years ago and have looked through it many times since. In a move a few years ago I must have lost it in the shuffle and forgot all about it. I remembered it one night and got right on line and ordered it. I love this book. It puts simple Zen philosophies to a cartoon format that is enjoyable to read. I recommend this book to everyone!

Zen is so simple, simplifies your life, is all good, actually it is like what Jesus taught,yes, I am educated enough to say so, and it is all in cartoon form.Each panel is short, to the point, yet teaches a lesson. It may be common sense lessons, yet is so profound.It truly changed my life. After studying Zen in boring, complicated, heavy books, this is all I needed. Absolutely delightful.If you want to discredit or bash this book, go ahead, it only means you need to read it again, simple, easy, forgiving.Have a Zen Day.

Amazing wisdom.

This book presents life change and affirming principles with a child-like simplicity that makes what this book says accessible even at times of great stress. It is one of my favorite companions.

This was a book i had in my house during my childhood. And there were so many wise stories I remembered through the years. I really wanted to find a copy and revisit them again. The stories are better than i remember. So amazingly simple yet so intensely deep and sustaining. The way it is written and drawn, the thoughts will linger with you for years.

Zen Speaks is a staple for our family conversation, with comics often providing the perfect zen philosophical teaching for a moment, decision or situation. Accessible, deep and good for beginning to share Zen Philosophy with the whole family, but I used it for years before we had kids.

I saw the chinese version of these when I was a kid and always thought they looked neat but I dont read chinese.. nice to see it in english and its a great way to spend some time, love the art, mad accessible.
