is this a compact or full size iron?

I am an engineer working in a very very highly competitive market. I answer your question just for the sake of hoping the B&D products will be improved. Both B&D irons that I bought were full size and they were absolute junk products. Assuming the first iron was my bad luck to use it with water leaking during its use, I bought a second one same model a few years later to find both were equally junk. I cannot imagine weather design engineers were at fault or the guys making these irons in China deliberately want them to leak so that they can make clone irons with a different brand name to be sold in the USA. Just guessing to learn how Black&Decker gone to so low quality.

while ironing, water shoots out of the hole where the water is put in.  Why?

Same thing happens to me.  Poor design with no cover for the water storage.

Question 3

Is it possible to turn off the steam on the higher heat settings? I can't find a way to do this and the instructions are no help.

Unfortunately there is no separate control specifically for steam.  It's tied to the heat settings and is automatically turned on for the upper settings (4,5,6).  Like Rolando stated, the only way to get it to NOT steam at those settings is to remove all water.  As a side note, It's not the heat that removes the wrinkles but the steam.  If you are doing a transfer that REQUIRES no steam, I would definitely suggest removing water, even if there was a setting.Hope this helps
