I built a trial part first. Then I heated the insert with my soldering iron and pressed it into the plastic. It sort of melts as it goes. When it is cooled down you can push it out but it takes plastic with it. You get a nice clean thread good for many assembly/disassembly cycles. If you have machined plastic a #2 drill or 7/32" will work. **Q: what is the length of 'long'?** A: 7.92mm +/- 0.13 mm. There are 2D drawings on the last picture. **Q: Will these work in hdpe?** A: I machine a lot of HDPE. I have never used these inserts in it but I can't see why they would not work, You basically get the inserts hot then push them into a hole. You may have to do some experimentation with hole diameter and temperature of the insert so that means you will have to experiment a bit. With 3D printed parts there are even more variables. Most of the time the plastic will fail in shear before the bond between the plastic and insert fails. That is about the best you can expect.
