I cut the pay-TV cord some time ago. Sometimes an inexpensive compass is handy when pointing the off-air antenna (OTA). The first compass I ordered from another vendor did not even have a needle that would point north. This compass however, is just as good as any Scouting compass I had growing up. It's lightweight and easy to see through the base if placed on a map. The dial is easy to turn. The base has measurements on the side and top for determining distance. This is a good starter compass or just to have around the house.

Buy this compass. Learn how to use it. A compass is for heading in a straight line, again and again. It's good to know where you're going and how to get back. Actually, buy two, and give one to the person you know who has a bad sense of direction. Teach them how to use it. They will thank you.

This is a great compass for scouting, orienteering, and general hiking use. Accuracy is above average (having checked against my Garmin GPS and military lensatic compass.) Well-made; all straight edges are smooth (no jagged or dented edges), the needle floats smoothly and the bezel turns smoothly (no definite clicks.) The baseplate arrow, N(orth) arrow tip, mid-pt dot on arrow, and alignment dots (to center arrow) are phosphorescent- I shined a flashlight on the compass and in a blacked out room, the dots are very bright; easy to see all five dots to navigate in the dark. Has a red lanyard attached to the compass. Has a magnifying glass (again, plastic, but works great.) The bezel is @ 1/4” in height; great serrated edge for better grip. The inner circle shows hash marks in degrees, for west & east declination (60 degrees each way.) Can be used for 1:15000 and 1:25000 maps. The only “negative” is that it’s clear plastic, so expect plenty of scratch marks from useage. Grit, sand, being dropped, jostled in a pack or pocket - this compass will pick up plenty of scratches...but hey, all tools eventually get scratched, dented and worn. But if you carry it in a pouch, maybe a thin sock, or even a shirt pocket with nothing else in the pocket, this compass will last! Great buy, great price. Gonna show my new Boy Scout grandson how to use it.

I ordered 3 compasses for my Scouts. One out of the three compass’ bezel wouldn’t rotate smoothly and clicked when rotating. Customer service and communication is excellent. They resolved the issue quickly. The accuracy isn’t 100% and all three compass may be off by a degree or two but good enough for orienteering 101 for learning. When I hit the Whitney or the JMT i’ll use a different compass.

Use this way hiking in a local part just wanted to have something they taste like got off the trail. They worked well.

This is a perfect Boy Scout compass. Yes, you can set declination offset from magnetic north. I'm not sure what the other reviews were saying. I bought two of these from a third party seller here on Amazon, TurnOnSport. Both compasses are cheap, in that the rotating compass ring is just clipped on with plastic tabs. But what do you expect for $8? It's perfect for my two Boy Scouts who will probably lose them again (the reason for this purchase). But, it's a perfect compass for basic orienteering. It's accurate, you can set the declination, it has a magnifying glass and a lanyard. I'm happy with my purchase.

Great Compass for the money.

I bought this compass to test the quality of a cheap compass so I could teach Orienteering. The results were HORRIBLE! The compass was highly inconsistent in my hands and would never go back to the same place as I turned back around both inside and outside my home. So I put it to the test. Check out my pictures. I am not a geomagnetic expert, but there is surly not 10-degrees of variance in my home only 12 inches apart! The compass is highly inaccurate and would lead to many people getting lost for sure. I hoped I found a cheap alternative to teach 10 youth orienteering in Trail Life, but no way. If I can't get a good read at my own house, no way I trust it in the woods! On top of the junk readings, the compass is "Water Resistant" because it is junk plastic with no quality of build. I know it's under $10, but this thing probably cost $0.10 to press. There is no declination adjustment and the "high speed magnetic needle" has the accuracy of my 10-year old telling me the directions. Wasted my money, and my time. It will be returned. The only, and I mean ONLY good thing is it comes with an adjustable lanyard. In summary, DO NOT BUY THIS COMPASS! Go buy Suunto A-30 and spend the money for a compass you can learn with and will last you for many years, not minutes.

Is not that the compass is not working but I would like my magnifying glass and longer ruler too.

The northside of compasses' needle is the red side, the side that points to the North. As can be seen in the photos, the white side is pointing to the North, that is, the compass is pointing to the South. Ridiculous! To make things worse, the needle is unbalanced. The needle is pointing downwards to what should be the southside. The needle gets stuck if not inclined. It is crap.
