I had trouble opening them. I had trouble inserting my lights and closing the clips. I had trouble making connections and getting all my light to work. Then I went back and looked at the pictures. The clips are easy to open once you see how to open them. The connectors should slide UNDER the little clips and NOT ON TOP of them. I don't know why, but making sure to align the polarity (i.e. plus sign (+) on the clips to plus sign (+) on the light strips) made a difference and my lights ALL worked.
