Q: does the 70/50mm relate to the length of the lock (i.e the thickness of the gate) or the length of the bolt?

Depth/thickness of the gate you are drilling through.

Q: Does this lock work left or right hand

Yes - I fitted mine the opposite way from the photo.

Q: Can you change the lock part? As I have few more doors, I'd like to use the same key.

I'd say no you can't. I wanted to do the same and had a good look but it's not a normal lock. As a result I've multiple keys

Q: Is it possible to get the same barrel as this lock for a shed?

It will fit a 50mm door so depends on you shed door thickness.
