Is the tip thin enough to go into a motorcycle battery? I bought a cheapie from my auto store that was too wide to fit!

I don't currently have a motorcycle, but I see a problem. I the tip size may be an issue, but I would have greater concern with the volume of acid to be drawn up. The glass tube is fairly wide and you need to draw enough acid that to indicator float actually floats. This is about 3 inches. I suspect that this may be more than the total volume of a cell. If you think the volume is OK, you can insert a piece of small plastic tubing in the hydrometer and reach into the battery with that.

will this hydrometer work for both car batteries and deep cycle batteries?

Yes as long as you have access to the acid in the battery.

My hydrometer only reads fair for all of the cells on six different batteries. I have another older and different type that reads good. Is mine bad?

Batteries are hard to figure out at first. The best advice is probably to compare one or all cells to the others on one battery. Comparing one cell of one battery to one cell of another is not good. I would first read up on batteries in general through facebook or an RV website. The hydrometer is a good unit, but the glass tube is very fragile. Mine was received with the upper portion of the glass crammed into the rubber stop inside the bulb. I had to break it off evenly and repair it with some silicone gasket material. I think you will be impressed if you compare it to one of the plastic ones.
