Great product if you understand it!
So, I looked around quite a bit before buying this, and ultimately settled on this one, despite the mixed reviews! I have a very nice entertainment set up in my room, and my problem came when I got a huge bed and the only thing that struggles to control on the remote is the Samsung Blu-ray player which is quite low on my TV stand- I have to hold the remote really high for it to have that line of sight and work! after reading the reviews on this extender, It looked like to me that the product was effective, if you knew what you were doing.. I was willing to give it a try! First, you've got to understand how it works! I've included a couple pictures as an example.... So the bottom line is, you must have a direct line of sight from your remote to the eye of the extender, and a direct line of sight from the blaster to the intended device eye! I used a flashlight to see exactly where the eye is on my Blu-ray player, simply shine a bright light on an angle on the front of your device, and it will light up the eye through the tinted dark plastic of any device! Remember, if you are trying to control multiple devices (like in the case of putting your complete entertainment set in a closet or cabinet) you will have to get the model with multiple blasters, one for each device you want to control! Each blaster must be put directly in front of the eye on each device to be controlled! I placed mine just below the IR receiver of my Blu-ray player so that when the remote does have a direct line of sight to the eye of the device it'self, then it doesn't have to depend upon the extender.. This only matters to me, and you can set that up to your preference. Now the other part I saw in the reviews was some people having trouble with the eye of the extender, saying that you have to have your remote really close or it doesn't work at all... I experimented with it a little bit, and once again I shined a bright light on the device and could see right through the tinted plastic to see where the eye was placed- I did this because my initial set-up was similar in the fact that it was not reading the commands from my remote unless I was within a couple feet max! What I learned is that the eye is on top, or facing upward from what you might think is the front! I originally had it placed the device on top of my small Bose remote controller in front of the TV, but in that position the eye didn't get a clear signal from my remote. As I said, I had to experiment and try it in a few different positions to see what worked best for me, and I settled on the position you will notice in the photo- standing up, with the top facing forward, with the sticky tape stuck to the silver TV stand above my Bose controller. I now have perfect control of my Blu-ray player virtually anywhere in the room! I hope this helps! What I like: -Seems well built for the low cost! -Low profile eye piece and blaster, doesn't look bulky, out of place, or unintended. What I didn't care for: -The bright light on the eye piece and the power supply! (more on this below) -The lack of instructions and information for set-up! If you weren't tech savvy, you most likely would have set it up wrong! What I did for the bright light on the eye piece and the power supply adapter was color the light with a black permanent marker... You don't see the marker, it doesn't make it look any different, but it blocks a decent amount of the light, and you still see it flash when you are using your remote! Now it is far less intrusive when watching a movie in a dark environment!

Has a mysterious feature that puzzle you. Read more!
This particular model was at an ideal price point. It came with a little USB power support, the cable length was nice and long for the distance that I needed for my install and it worked immediately. The sensor that receives the output of your remote has a little green light which is on all the time I'm not really a fan of that. So you can paint it or use a very dense marker to cover that led as it provides no useful information yes here comes The mysterious part hold on to your hats. The in-depth instructions that you receive with it states that it has a green and red LED, I naturally assumed that that would allow you to track when it detected a signal by a changing color. But like so many things in my life that wasn't the correct answer so I was proven wrong. I tried plugging it in in a different socket I let the power stay off for a minute nothing that I did would cause the red LED to come off until. I was testing locations and I supposedly looking away and I caught a glimpse of a red LED in my peripheral view, I don't know which key I pushed or if I even push the key however I was unable to replicate that. And that's where the mystery lies why would you put it in an instruction manual and why does it exist?. this seems to have had no effect on the functionality of the device it is a great relay device and perfect for the price I would highly recommend it. If you're like myself and want to keep things a little stealth just black out the LED area and you won't have to think about it again. that's one of the joys of the little device. Unlike so many electronic devices I purchased over the years they seem to work but then you're constantly having the monkey with them for one reason or another to get continued favorable outcomes. Now I know a lot of you are probably thinking well this device it's not really much else it's just a simple relay for range extender. But I would counter that is just the point there are so many ways this device could have been a failure but it's not and I find that very satisfying it's wonderful to have something that you can count on in your life. And it is so good that Amazon is able to allow me to get this product brought over here across the high seas from a far away and mystical land that serves to enhance my meager existence in this world. If only this kind of attention to detail and talent went into other devices that one could purchase what a better world we would have. I think there must be an enterprising student out there in college or high School that could essentially write a manifesto on this particular device used as a building blocks for a more sustainable and productive society in fact the society that became the last society on Earth because perfection was achieved. If you have continued reading I am not sure how you were able to do it as for the last two sentences I've been doing everything that could to get you to close this review you are persistent headstrong individual in life you don't want to let one moment of time slip through your hands you want to grab the bull by the horns and go to the right of your lifetime you appreciate useless discussion and comments. Bless you, bless you, bless you sir or madam I salute you as a proud world citizen.

Price Is Indicative of Quality
We just rearranged the living room and added a coffee table that blocks the DVR -- making it pretty difficult to control the TV. Found this as a cheap alternative to rearranging some more. It was easy to connect and at first, it worked very well. After about a week, I noticed that the DVR would not respond even though the receiver flashed when I pressed buttons on my remote. At the time, performance wasn't so bad that it bothered me too much -- plus I was thinking that the problem was with the DVR and not the remote extender. After two weeks, the problem became progressively worse -- to the point where it was frustrating to watch TV. By week three, we began avoiding the TV in the living room. After some troubleshooting, I found that the DVR worked fine when the remote signal was in its line of sight. That's when I requested a return of the product. To give you a bit of background: I'm 20-year electronics professional who has worked on nearly everything from radar systems to network backbone devices. There's not much to this gadget which is why it's disappointing that it did not work.

Does what it should. Foolproof simplicity.
This "IR Bug" is exactly what you expect it to be. It and works and has reasonably long cables. I bought a 60 inch TV to put over the fireplace so having the old TV cabinet open to control the Tivo and Stereo was unacceptable to my wife. All of the equipment except the Tivo works with HDMI-CEC protocol, (Why Tivo, why???) so I just needed one transmitter for theTivo. I was able to plug it in, slap the receiver against the front of the now-closed stereo cabinet, the transmitter near the Tivo receiver and I was done. Took about 3 minutes to install. The reason it only gets 4 stars is this. Wire routing. The IR receiver is the large item that goes outside the cabinet. Why, then, would that be in the middle of the wiring sequence with two wires (power and transmitter) running from it? I understand that this is the part with the electronics, but it is the farthest component from power and the farthest from the component to be controlled. Having two wires means you need to snake one wire from the external receive to your component and the other wire from the external receiver to the power source. Kind of a pain. The receiver should be at the end of the wire, the transmitter in the middle and the power closest to the transmitter. This isn't just a personal preference, it is simple wire routing logic.

Simple and effective.
This is a great little problem solver for when you have a TV with just a single cable box or disc player as the source and you want to keep the source hidden away. In my case I was wall mounting a flatscreen and I had a DirecTV Genie mini DVR attached to the back of the TV for a nice clean installation. All I had to do was attach the IR receiver of this repeater system on the front of the TV in the corner right next to the IR receiver for the TV using the double sided adhesive included. Then I attached the IR transmitter to the DirecTV Genie mini DVR IR receiver on the back of the TV. I plugged in the USB connector to a port on the TV (I could have also used the one on the DVR) and zip tied the cables neatly. There is no programming or setup involved because the repeater simply "repeats" the signal received from your remote to the device that is hidden away. While in most cases you will want to power this system using one of the many USB ports found on all electronics these days, but it is nice that they also include an AC power adapter for additional flexibility.

Worked better than anticipated.
Got this to use on my A/V receiver that sits on the bottom shelf of the entertainment rack and is partially blocked by a coffee table. It meant having to hold the remote up in the air and point it down toward the unit to change volume or other settings. Or when turning off everything with a Harmony remote, it would leave the A/V on. Would have liked to get one with a phono plug on the transmitting end since I have the input on the A/V but at this price and good reviews, it seemed a no-brainer to give it a try and see if it worked. Installation was a breeze and they give you plenty of wire. I used the USB port on the back of the cable box for power which eliminated the need to plug in something else into an outlet. Though the receiver and the small transmitter are self adhesive, I just placed the receiver in front of the cable box, and merely hung the transmitter over the top of the A/V in front of the IR window. I was absolutely amazed at the difference it made. The receiver works so well, I can point the remote up and to the wall behind me and it works like a charm. For the price, it was money well spent and see no reason to try a different one with the plug.

Need to control a remote mounted BT amp in ceiling.
Works fine, although I found that attaching the IR sender light directly to the front of the device was almost necessary - not sure it floods an area well, so ,closer to IR eye, the better. The adhesive tape lasted less than 24 hours, but since the amp was located out-of-sight, just wrapped the sender with duct tape to the amp face - very Red Green-like! Remote to IR receiver isn't terribly sensitive either, but I'm usually within a foot or two of it and it seems to take the input predictably. Not sure this would be a great solution for someone trying to control a device from across the room - just doesn't seem to be all that sensitive on either end, but it works for my situation. Was looking for a simple solution vs. crawling up through a ceiling access panel to restore operation in the event of a power outage, which automatically sets my amp back to the line input as a default. I keep the amp and IR sender unit powered 24/7 so only trouble occurs when power drops. Now I just walk up to sensor on wall and change input with remote, but any change to amp - input, volume, or FM channel, etc.,, fairly easy now. Well worth the reasonable cost If it still works after a year or two, probably still worth it and if not, I'll get another one or similar.

Cheap and not the best, but I got it working for my needs.
When I first got this I installed with ease, my DVD player is in a cabinet and I was sick of leaving the door open when we watched movies, so we were still able to use the remote. The sensor reader for the remote is finicky - the original placement of the sensor to the remote only worked if I was directly in front of it, in a perfectly straight line and under 2.5 feet away...which didn't work if I was sitting on the couch! I ended up attaching it to the front of my DVR cable box and this seemed to help, now I can at least play/pause/ff etc when laying on the couch, either directly in line with the sensor or at an angle. I don't think it would work if you were more than 6 feet away, so if you have a large room, I'd look at a higher quality remote extender. I'm sure I'll be replacing this one within the year, so it would have been better to spend a few extra dollars now and get a better quality one to begin with.

Great simple yet effective product
Was a bit wary of this product category since all choices had mixed reviews. Also it looked a little underwhelming when it came in a see through pouch like you see store brands of cables. There is no instruction manual. Just low resolution a color printout sheet. Which is all you need. Simply plugged in and it was set to go and worked perfectly. A couple of things: 1. Took me a few seconds to locate where the receiver on my DVD player was - one of those funky design with curved colored plastic shell below which you see nothing except display bits when they light up. So I made a tube of sorts with one hand and pointed the remote through that along the length of the DVD player to locate roughly where the receiver was. 2. No LED lights up when you plug it in so you cant tell if its on that way. But when you aim a remote at it and press something you will see a flicker of receiving. So use that to test if its on. Happy remoting. p.s. Have plugged into wall socket. Not tested connecting with USB for power.

OK
It was a bit tricky to position. I'm not sure how far distant you could be, but for me, just to get around an opaque door blocking the line of sight, it is fine.
