how heavy is it? can a senior 85 year old handle it?

Anyone tried to add some sturdier barbs or something hard flexible so it would be raking not just sweeping?

No, but I added a piece of sheet aluminum about 21 inches long and about 2-1/5 wide and fastened it to the bottom of the front edge of the sweeper to reduce the amount of yard waste being thrown in front of the sweeper. I have nut trees and now it picks up more of the nut shells and twigs than before as opposed to pushing them ahead of the sweeper.

Will this pick up pine cones?

I can't say with 100% certainty but I tend to believe it wIl pick up small and medium sized pine cones. I hope you find this helpful.

Will this sweeper pick up "helicopter" seed pods from maple trees?

It does fine with leaves but I would imagine the design would not do that well with helicopter seeds because the aera is too small for the flaps to hold on to.
